It's Not Terrible to Ask For Help
#1
January 24, 1889 - Hogsmeade Hospital; Potion & Plant Poisoning Ward
It wasn't a very strange day at all. Though not a slow one. One patient in particular seemed to have gotten sick with a plant that Katerina had not even heard of before. Perhaps something brought in from a different country? Or were the symptoms simply abnormal. Either way, she thought it best to consult with a doctor that had more experience than herself. Though she didn't want to go directly to Mr. Ari Fisk. Ever since he had gotten married, it had left her thinking a little too much over her confusing feelings towards his brother. It was far too distracting. So her next thought was Mr. Oswald, even if the man was more known to do the bare minimum at his work.

Looking around for him, glad that her patient was stable enough for her to do so at the moment, she finally found him in the hall. "Mr. Oswald, may I please take a moment of your time?" She asked politely. It wasn't as if she was asking too much... was she? Did this make her seem stupid in her own job? No, what was stupid was to let pride get in her way from letting the patient get the best care that they needed. And ignoring her pride, she was fully willing to ask for assistance.

Ugh, the day was a busy flood of patients and Diligent had already done his daily quota and more. He was doing the boring paperwork part of things when Miss Bass came to save him from that. With more work. Well, whatever, he could roll with it. Anything was better than filling in stupid paperwork any day. "Of course, what do you need?" He asked, having no idea what she might need him for. At the very least, there were interns for most things that she would probably go to before him. So he could at least assume that whatever she wanted would be somewhat interesting.

Time was limited, and she needed to get through her thought process quickly. "My patient is barely responding to treatments. While she is stable, there has been no improvements." She described the original theories, their observations of the patient, and what was known about the symptoms so far. "One of the interns had suggested a plant I've never even heard of, but didn't have too much information on said plant. I was hoping that you would have some advise on the matter?"

Diligent listened as best as he could as Miss Bass rambled on. That was a lot of information to process. "Has she been abroad? It's possible that the patient could have picked up something from a foreign country. There's also the fact that new magical illnesses are consistently randomly cropping up." Like that time those girls had all changed colors for some reason or another.

Perhaps it was too much information at once, but what else could she do? Her patient might not be in as stable of a condition if she took too long getting back. "The patient has stated that her symptoms started shortly after tasting a bit of a strange bottle of wine." Katerina did wonder what sense it was to not ask around to be sure where the wine had come from in the first place, especially before almost giving it to their employer. But that was irrelevant. "At first it has seemed that she had been improving, but then she got worse half an hour later."

"Did she bring in the bottle of wine with her?" He asked since that seemed to be a very logical starting point in figuring out what had been done to the woman. It was sounding more and more like she had been poisoned.

Did she? She tried to remember if one of the interns had discovered anything. "The employers did, and I had one of the interns look into it while I attended to the patient. If they were having troubles, they should have come back to me." But how new had that intern been? Not going to last long if they weren't up for telling their co-workers that something was wrong. They should have come back to her anyway. "Will you come with me? Perhaps we can speak to the intern in question." She said after a moment. Hopefully the paperwork before him was not time sensitive.

"Yes, it would probably help for me to see the patient for myself anyway," Diligent said. After all, he was generally good at his job - he just tended to choose not to do much about it. Getting up from the table, he motioned for Miss Bass to lead the way.

That was also a good idea. If the man was not good at his job, she wouldn't have asked for help in the first place. She lead him back to the patient's room. "Miss Wilhelmina Davis." She introduced quietly, not wishing to disturb the sleeping patient.

Examining the patient as respectfully as he could considering their differing genders and the fact the woman was asleep, Diligent stroked his chin in thought. "I definitely think it is likely some sort of poison. Something that was probably hidden within the wine." An antidote for uncommon poisons would set the woman to rights - unless it was a common potion which would mean needing an entirely different potion. They needed to figure out which type of poison the woman had ingested (if she had) so that they could decide the proper potion to brew.

Poison, the culprit that most people who were involved in figuring this whole situation out was thinking. "Quite likely. What type of poison is something I am very unsure of." Giving her too many potions to test their theories could prove deadly. Which was what she was afraid of.

"Whether or not the wine was a means of concealing the taste or odor is a factor as well. Many people tend to slip cyanide into beverages," Diligent said, not even sure how he knew that but he did. "Strychnine is another possibility." Really, there were too many options. It could also be a magical type of poison - a potion of some sort. They really needed to find that wine.

Katerina was sure that the intern up ahead was the very one. They needed to get answers as quickly as possible, to save a life.

Wrap?

Time was of the essence and for once, Diligent did his due when it came to helping Miss Bass. Once her patient was obviously improving, Diligent left Miss Bass to it and went off in search of a broom closet or something to nap in. He would have to make a note to try and avoid Miss Bass in the future lest she end up making him do more work again.
