The urchin blinked once at Tabitha, her thoughts as frozen as the grief in her bones. She gave no resistance as the ghostly lady pushed the hat back into her hands, while thrusting a little bundle at Charley. She didn't remember grabbing it until Tabitha was halfway done rattling out a long list of instructions Charley didn't think she would stick in her brain anyway.

"Yes, please," she intoned, looking down at the package in her hands. The potion and bandages were worth more than her hat, far more than a meal in the tea room even. And the nurse was just giving them to her? Charley managed to swallow down the thick emotion that coated her throat, donning her hat once more. She scratched at the cheeks under her eyes after tucking her braids up, looking once more the grubby little street urchin who had walked in today.

And urchins, no matter how little, didn't cry.

"Oh, I'll jes' follow my nose!" Charley tapped it twice, as if she had to remind a nurse where a nose was. She found herself grinning again, and that didn't feel too bad. She didn't itch so much any longer, and she wasn't dead either. Both of which were major strides for the state the urchin had arrived in, and that alone earned her a grin. "I en't such an orf chump I can't track down some food. It's the paying part that gets me in trouble."

She waved the voucher and took the note from the nurse, tucking it with the bundle inside her trousers pocket. Patting it twice, Charley tipped her hat at Tabitha. "You been the good sort, miss, glad I met you afore I died."

Charley chuckled as she scooted out the doorway, sniffing in search of the tea room and food to fill her belly. The urchin didn't notice of Tabitha was following or not, thinking too much about what kind of food a tea room would have. Maybe they even had cake, or something she could pretend was cake. Then she'd really have a happy birthday today, it wouldn't be so lousy after all.
