Helga slipped the dress off of Henrietta—Merlin, it was soaking and cold as ice—before helping her into the nightdress and coat. She'd remembered these sort of things happening when she was younger and unpredictable. When she used to fight with Marlena she might disappear from their bedroom only to reappear in the dining room to sounds of her mother yelling her name. However, that was when she was a child. Henrietta was a grown woman.

"It certainly was magic," she said concernedly, her brow creased as she grabbed the hairbrush off her nightstand. She raked it through Henrietta's wet hair, hoping to get rid of whatever moisture she could, a frown on her face. But magic of hat sort shouldn't be happening, Henrietta. Not to adults."

"But it happens all the time," Henrietta protested, as though she believed these sorts of things occurred to other people and not just to her. "Little magical spills. Like having a bit of water splashed out around a full bath. I'm sure it must happen in Hogsmeade even more than it does anywhere else," she insisted. "Do you mean nothing like that has ever happened to you? You must be lucky to have missed them."

Helga usually found humor in most things; it was necessary for being a debutante, where men said all sorts of unfunny things that she was expected to laugh at. This time, there was no humor. Her face fell, her frown hidden as she stood behind Henrietta, holding her wand up to cast a drying spell. It did not take long before Henrietta was dry, but from the touch of her skin she was still cold, and Helga had never mastered the warming charm on people.

"I don't think that's... normal," she said quietly, privately fearing for her friend's reaction. Nobody wanted to hear that they weren't normal, but in this case it was a necessary truth. "Magic is meant to be something we use, not something that uses us. It's why we have wands: for control."

"Of course it is," Henrietta insisted, undaunted by Helga's assertions. Though she was willing to take her friend's word as divine inspiration in almost every case, in this matter she seemed quite resolved. "It happens all the time. If it's never happened to you then you're lucky, that's all. Why do you think there's a whole department in the Ministry for Magical Accidents and Catastrophes? It just happens."

It seemed as though getting the truth through Henrietta's skull was going to be harder than she imagined. She turned Henrietta's body around to face her and gently grasped her shoulders with her hands. Her brows were creased with concern, and she gave her friend a small, sad smile. "That department is mainly focused on magical accidents, not accidental magic—not for adults, at least. After beginning Hogwarts I have never, ever had an instance where I made magic happen on accident," she insisted.

Henrietta leveled her eyes at her friend and listened as she spoke quite deliberately. She was making an awful show of this, wasn't she? It really didn't require so much fuss as Helga was making of it.

"You think I did that? Oh, dear, Helga, no," she insisted, as if this were the silliest thing she had heard all day. "I couldn't have managed something like that. I never even took the apparition classes at Hogwarts," she pointed out. "It was only an accident, that's all."

"Henrietta," Helga sighed. How was she meant to unpack all of this? First Henrietta had apparated into a freezing fountain without any intention to, and now she was claiming that these... these magical "accidents" happened so frequently that she felt defending them was necessary! It was clear that her friend was in denial—that, or nobody had bothered to explain to her that no adult witches or wizards had magical accidents!

"Think of it as... children being trained to use the chamber pot." She cringed at the analogy, but it was the best she could think of! "Once they learn how to do it, they rarely have accidents. They know what to do when they need to - go." Helga pinched the bridge of her nose, wishing there was a better way to explain. But controlling magic was like controlling one's bladder, wasn't it? "Magic should be the same way. Your body shouldn't be producing it on accident. Not at your age."

"It didn't," Henrietta insisted sharply. She'd been patient with her friend so far, but she couldn't just sit here like a simpleton while Helga made such odious analogies as that. "I didn't do anything. Now, if you'd be kind enough to drop it," she concluded, before turning her chair forcibly back towards the vanity. She could brush her own hair, if Helga was going to be difficult about things.

Confused, alarmed, hurt—there were so many emotions swirling through Helga's head as she turned to sit on the edge of the bed. If Henrietta was unwilling to listen to her, then what was stopping bad things from happening to her in the future? Henrietta needed to see, but she wasn't even ready to listen yet.

Rather than continue her nagging, Helga decided right there and then to do the grown up thing. "I'm sorry," she said, her voice quiet. "I shouldn't treat you that way. You know yourself." There was no denying that, but Helga was under the firm opinion that Henrietta was intentionally blinding herself to the reality of the situation. She knew that, with help, she might help Henrietta open her eyes, but she could not do that if her friend shut down and turned away.
