He supposed he did vaguely remember a conversation where she'd asked if he had something on his mind, but he'd been to distracted with everything else to even register that it was a Conversation, with a capital C, and not just small talk. He certainly didn't think one distracted conversation entitled her to sifting through every letter in his study in pursuit of anything he might be hiding from her.

"Well, based on how you've reacted so far, I think I made the right call," he said with clear cynicism.

Melody didn't have a response to that. She was sorry for having gone through his belongings, truly. However, she knew any utterance of an apology would fall on deaf ears. He had determined she was the villain to be despised, that she was the cause for everything. And, while Melody didn't deny she bore her fair share of guilt, she also didn't accept that it was entirely her fault.

"I'm not perfect, Ben," was all she could think to say.

It was all Ben could do not to roll his eyes at this. "Yeah, I know," he said, returning his attention to the clothes.

Melody knew before he even responded that this was it for them. That regardless of what he said or did now, they never stood a chance of being happy together. "Goodbye," she replied before returning to her room.

She knew one thing for certain as her bedroom door clicked shut behind her: she was relieved she hadn't fully unpacked her trunks.
