Murder on the Dancefloor
#1
24th July, 1890 — Devine Estate, Galleon Gala for GLEE
Ambrosia sipped her drink and half-listened to the chatter amongst her group, feeling about as content in public as Ambrosia ever did. The girl had been launched on society with less pomp than she had feared, her husband had overindulged in brandy last night, giving her a fine excuse to enjoy herself without him, and none of the children had disgraced themselves during the school year.

For once things were going as Ambrosia would have liked and even if things were not perfect - Liliana had, after all, not been struck by lightening yet - they were at least acceptable. Even this evening's charity was one that Ambrosia wholeheartedly supported and it was for that reason, and that reason alone, she had not immediately thrown away her dance card when it had magically acquired the name of not just her two brothers-in-law but a third gentleman she had certainly not prearranged a dance with.

And, of course, it was that time already.

"Excuse me ladies," she said, finishing her drink before elegantly sweeping across the dance floor towards the gentleman who looked slightly more perturbed by her approach than Ambrosia had anticipated.

"I believe the next dance is yours Mr Prewett."

The evening's design afforded Fitzroy Prewett something he did not often have: the opportunity to get the measure of pretty women with whom he had typically had little cause to engage—all under the banner of charity. As such, the wizard had made a number of donations, not only to the usual suspects (the Zabini sisters, Miss Scamander, and the rather intense Miss Lestrange, to name a few) but more exotic fare—such as the decidedly appealing, if older, Mrs. Ambrosia Selwyn.

He was, of course, acquainted with her husband and some of her extended family, but not to the extent that he would go out of his way to interact with any of them. Mrs. Selwyn, though their circles did occasionally overlap, had oft eluded him, however, and while it was not exactly proper to arrange a dance without first consulting the woman, he hoped she would take it in good fun.

"Punctual as well as graceful," he answered with a charming smile. "It seems I have found myself with an excellent partner indeed, Mrs. Selwyn!"

It was rare that a man other than her husband was so bold with Ambrosia Selwyn. Her brothers-in-law and she had long entered into a pact of benign indifference and other than the spouses of her friends very few men approached her: she had, in all honesty, been hoping to keep it that way until Hortense required a husband.

Mr Prewett was either very brave , very foolish or very arrogant. Or, most probably, a combination of all three that he was encouraged by ladies because he was also, yes she would admit, rather handsome.

“You’re too kind,” she said drily, offering her hand. “Shall we? I should hate for you not to get your money’s worth.”

"Come now, Mrs. Selwyn," Fitzroy protested jovially as he led her to the dance floor, "it is for a good cause, after all." The way the woman had framed it made the whole evening sound as though it was altogether something else—something that Fitz did partake in on occasion, but did not care to speak of around the genteel women of society!

The pair took their respective positions as the music began to play, Fitz leading Mrs. Selwyn in steps he had known since boyhood.

“I suppose I cannot argue with that,” Ambrosia said with a slight smile, noting the callouses of his hand against her much softer one. If she recalled correctly – and she almost always did – he was still something to do with Quidditch and the grace of his movements around the floor certainly went a long way towards confirming that.

“You dance very well Mr Prewett. Precious few men seem to possess rhythm but I suppose your Quidditch days will have helped with that. You played, did you not?”

"Until the Ministry made me an offer my mother would never let me live down refusing," he answered with a chuckle. Really, quidditch and dancing skills did not correlate much at all; Fitzroy Prewett just happened to be excellent at both—among other things, of course. "I could never leave the pitch forever, though—I still train on occasion with my former team, though am not half so good at it any more as I would like!"

As he spoke, the hand on her back crept perhaps half an inch lower—not scandalous by any means, but no longer textbook in placement.

Ambrosia almost laughed – of course he still trained with the young sportsmen, no doubt he considered it a point of honour to outfly them and sent at least one of them home with a sizable bruise. It would have been a pathetic concept if she wasn’t fairly confident that the man who thought he was being terrible subtle with his roaming hands was quite capable enough to make a fine sight in the sky.

As they made a turn she inched her fingers a smidgen further across his broad shoulder.

“Oh I’m sure you still make all the young ladies blush,” Ambrosia said with a small challenge in her eyes. “On and off the pitch.”

"Would it make me a vain fellow to admit that I do?" Fitzroy asked in response, closing the gap between them ever so slightly. She was attractive, he had to give her that much—and not nearly as vapid as some of the young ladies his mother quested to mate him with.

“No vainer than most men of my acquaintance,” Ambrosia replied, letting herself be pulled in. If anyone was watching them it would all still look perfectly above board but Ambrosia felt considerably more engaged than she had during her dance with Daniel. “Though perhaps more entitled to brag that the average man."

The wizard let out a low chuckle, his words for Mrs. Selwyn and Mrs. Selwyn alone.

"I am hardly average."

His laugh was...not unpleasant, which was quite a startling realisation but not one that Ambrosia intended to dwell on when he was speaking to her in such a low tone.

"I never believe anything until I've seen it for myself Mr Prewett," the corner of her lips rose in a taunting smile as the dance came to a close and she inclined her head towards him in a small curtsy. "And you may find the price considerably higher next time."

"But undoubtedly worth it," he answered, removing his hands from her person at last.

They would be back.
