A profession talk as good as any other
#1
Sometime by the end of Hogwarts' last year

"Mr. Caulfield,

I suppose there is no right way to start a letter to a complete strange, to which I have no external reason to write to. In fact, you have never heard of me, something I found suitable to say - first things first - given you might have found strange that this letter has arrived in the first place.

My name is King Lukeson and, currently, I am a fifth-year student at Hogwarts. I have recently run into you at Hogsmeade, though we neither shared words nor looked at each other. In fact, I only know it was you because your act was published in a newspaper. I believe it was the product of your work, a Hit-Wizard if I recall it correctly. I’m writing this letter to ask you about what it is like to work in this profession.

I know it is a weird thing to send a message with this content, but I have struggled to comprehend what it is I want to do once out of Hogwarts, and I believe this profession is as good as any other for myself. However, we don’t learn of it nearly as much as I would like, which is why I realized talking to somebody who works with it directly might be my best chance of learning more.

If this comes as an inconvenience to you, feel free to toss this letter at the trash or have it burnt. If not, I would be pleased with getting a response.

With respect,
King Lukeson."

Mr. Lukeson,

Though I would be lying were I to say this owl did not take me by surprise, I am extremely pleased that I have been able to inspire someone such as yourself to pursue a career within the Ministry.

Becoming a Hit Wizard takes a lot of hard work and dedication - qualities I feel assured in believing you possess. It is dangerous and fulfilling work and I dare not say it is without reward.

Might I ask why you would consider becoming a Hit Wizard instead of another field within the Ministry of Magic?

I ask simply to help give you the answers you are after. I would love nothing more than to help an aspiring young man find their way in the world - and a career in the Ministry is unquestionably one of the most honorable careers to pursue.

"Mr. Caulfield,

you make an excellent point, of which I hadn't thought of before sending my previous letter. I suppose reading about your actions has, at some level, inspired me. If anything because I have rarely come across a profession which I could see myself pursuing, for a number of reasons that will have a better place to be discussed later in this letter.

Some people choose their work because of the adventure that comes from it. Others pursue, instead, stability. I see myself wanting neither the first nor the second. In fact, if I were talented enough to please those who live in both our world and that of muggles, I would choose to be a writer instead - it is a dream of any writer, I believe, that their words will reach the heart and mind of others aside from themselves.

However, I know this is wishful thinking. I would be a fool to ignore reality for the sake of following this passion. Instead, it has come to me it is best to decide what I want to do upon graduation. As you might know, us, the Lukeson, have been hit with a certain amount of tragedy and this has taken a toll on my grades. This rules out certain works such as aurors and healing. I wouldn't want either, but faced with reality I am forced to focus on other jobs. The Ministry is a place I could see myself working, better than any creative outlet.

I believe the work of a Hit Wizard is one faced with dangers, yes, but also with the prospect of helping people find solutions to problems they could not find themselves. A wizard should never put themselves in danger for the sake of imprisoning somebody who has hurt a loved one, nor should they remain in danger if another wizard escapes prison or begins a number of attacks in a certain area. Working to ensure such wizards are caught and brought to justice sounds like a job better than most others to be found at the Ministry. Perhaps this is one inventive mind speaking, which is why I have decided to ask, directly, of your thoughts and memories.

Thank you for taking the time to send me a response.

With respect,
King Lukeson."

Mr. Lukeson,

I am honoured to read I am a cause of inspiration.

I do understand your thinking with regard to your reasoning. I like the honesty - it is a trait that would serve you well, whichever career you elect to venture down.

I have heard of the troubles your family has been having and I can only extend my sincere condolences.

I shall keep this owl brief for I feel there is only so much some ink can portray. I would be happy to discuss this further with yourself during the holidays, in person.

If you are strongly considering a career within the Department of Law Enforcement, Mr. Lukeson, then I wish to meet with you in person. I would explain the purpose of my department further then, for you.

Please return by owl when and where is convenient for yourself and I shall be more than obliged to help discuss whatever you need.

Regards,

"Mr. Caulfield,

thank you for your kind words in regards to my family. Although it has put us all in great distress, no wonder we have felt better with the sheer generosity of friends and acquaintances.

I would be just as happy to meet you at Hogsmeade, should you visit the village at any time during the holidays. Please let me know when it is you could visit, so I will go on the same date. It is a great honor to meet with you, sir, and I am sure it will be of great gain for myself as a student and person.

We shall see each other in a few months.

With respect,
Mr. King Lukeson."
