The Good Sense Corset

Enclosed package

Darling Idunn,

I have only just finished work on the enclosed as I write this so forgive me if my handwriting seems untidy but I made you this in a fever of determination after a young lady visited me two days ago. I won't reveal her name - not in this letter anyway, but I may tell you when I see you in person as you will definitely know it! - but her bust was quite deformed and she told me, in floods of tears after I pointed it out to the poor girl, that it was because her mother had forced her to wear corsets through her adolescence that restricted the natural development of her body.

Obviously my thoughts immediately turned to you my love and though I have never encouraged you to wear anything restrictive I have been quite remiss in providing you with alternatives. I've already been through your wardrobes and taken away anything I think might cause you problems - please don't worry, I'll have a whole new set ready for you when you come home and I hope in the meantime you will do away with any item that so much as contains a whiff of whalebone!

I know it sounds terribly hypocritical of me darling but it's one thing for grown women to wear corsets and quite another for you to ruin your breasts before they've finished growing.

Much love,

Mama.

Mrs. Fraser,

I have no mother. Please do not write to me again.

Cordially,

Mother,

I must thank you for thinking of me, especially when your story does illustrate that many mothers do not care properly for the well-being of their daughters. This new contraption certainly does look comfortable. I hope it will serve profitable for you moving forward.

With this said, I do wish you had waited until my return for the Easter holidays, that you might have given it to me in person rather than entrust it to the mail and that we might have gone through my wardrobe together. Moving forward, I do wonder if this would not be a more sensible arrangement.

Give Father a kiss from me, and instruct him to give the same to you.

Yours,
Idunn

Darling Idunn,

Profitable indeed! I hope you know that while I may offer a similar design to other young ladies this one was made entirely out of love for you and no one else in your year can say that of their undergarments! I was thinking of sending something to your brother to promote air circulation but I haven't found a pattern for that just yet - don't say anything to him darling, I want it to be a surprise but you might suggest he writes to your father if he has any concerns beforehand.

I already have plans for us during the Easter holidays, don't you worry, you won't be bored at all!

All my love,

Mama.

Mother,

I only wish that you knew the dread with which your so-called reassurances fill me.

Yours,
Idunn
