Henry Berkwood vs. Nick Blott
#1
April 27th, 1894 — Hogsmeade Memorial Assembly Rooms
Dueling Tournament

This, Pandora knew, was one of the less desirable aspects of the job: to hold authority within the Ministry was to be called upon, on occasion, for tasks one thought a waste of time. Pandora, though, had long been more generous with her time than others, knowing she could have an abundance of it if that was her will. This afternoon would not be wasted, for when it was done, she would start it anew, focus it upon pursits more to her interest.

But this, she would do well enough that it would not reflect badly on her, not so well that she would be top of the list the next time 'volunteers' were needed. The witch reviewed the rules at something of a clip before casting her attention to the first of the two wizards.

"Mr. Berkwood, you are to begin, please," Pandora indicated.

Harry was just here for the fun of competition. That was genuinely the only explanation that made any sense, short of some kind of mental break.

After bowing to Mr. Blott, Harry cast flipendo.

Nick had more experience of wanting to hex people in the face than he necessarily did of doing so – but he had been lured in by the sweet, sweet prize pot, and really, how hard could it be?

An idiot could do it, probably. “Impedimenta,” Nick pronounced, to hopefully slow down the attack.

Pandora Foxglove liked to consider herself fairly unflappable, and was not the sort to toss around words like 'flabbergasted'. Nonetheless, her face still clearly broadcasted surprise as Mr. Berkwood's spell managed to backfire—without any aid from Mr. Blott—and knock himself clear off the stage. Truly, she was flabbergasted.

She allowed the mediwitch on site to ensure the wizard had damaged no more than his pride before bidding Mr. Blott begin the next round. Pandora did not even formally declare the first point—it was as plain as day to all and sundry.

So maybe an idiot couldn’t do it, after all – or Nick had been much too modest about his own abilities.

Regardless, he was a little worried about what might come out of Berkwood’s wand next, just in case the only victim of his bad spellcasting was not himself. Maybe the Confundus Charm would make him so confused he forgot he had to cast another spell at all?

One second Harry was on his feet casting his spell, and the next he was on his back, staring dazedly up at the mediwitch who was asking him if he was all right. He had definitely bruised something, but he was on his feet again, so that was... good. Probably.

Harry cast a shield charm, thinking that, really, what was the worse that could do if it backfired, right?

Well, if nothing else, Berkwood restored some of Pandora's limited faith in him as a functional spellcaster, but his shield charm cracked under the pressure of Blott's confundus charm.

"Mr. Blott is the winner," the witch announced, "and will proceed to the next round of our tournament."
