Appearance:

Standing at 5’10”, he doesn’t cut much of an imposing figure, but he makes up for it in his presence in the room. With an athletic build and a penchant for outdoors, he’s tan and toned. Lyall likes to keep himself looking sharp and keeps his rich brown hair coiffed perfectly. Though it’s not quite as fashionable as he would like, he does sport well-maintained facial hair as he thinks it makes him look more mature than his naturally boyish looks allow. His wardrobe consists of sharp suits and ministry robes, but he cleans up nicely for social events when the time calls for it. Lyall sticks to darker neutrals, preferring a classic look to anything too questionable. He is right handed for writing and wandwork.

A Second Son Lyall joins his older brother, a successful pregnancy after one loss between them.

Childhood
Lyall’s childhood is nothing special. His mother is a bit overprotective after the loss of a sister in childbirth. He was always an independent child who shied away from too much affection, so naturally thrived more under his father’s hand than his mother’s. He was taught to ride and fence, archery and hunting, all of the things typical of an upper-middle class family. He excelled at the physical where his older brother had always specialized in academics. Lyall became the more outgoing one, making friends easily and generally spending his time outside with his peers.

Hogwarts
1865-1872 Lyall spends his Hogwarts years in Slytherin. He networks easily and makes friends with the “right” people. He’s affable and easy to get along with, but has a bit of a temper and a flirtatious streak that get him pegged as a bit of a troublemaker. Not the younger McCarthy, surely? So unlike his brother!

He isn’t a terrible student however, excelling in Charms and Transfiguration, especially. He finds them fascinating and useful. Potions is a disaster and History of Magic is a bit of a joke, but he does alright in some of the other practical classes like Herbology. He adds Care of Magical Creatures and hates it, so loses it after OWLs.

His Hogwarts years are about as unremarkable as his childhood, but Lyall strives to be anything but. Once he graduates is when he starts to really shine.

Ministry Man In his obligatory time as an intern, Lyall does his best to impress all of the right people.

Magical Accidents & Catastrophes Finding himself right at home in the fast-paced atmosphere of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes. Lyall proves himself to be capable under pressure, a good teammate, reliable and stable. He also finds himself enjoying it more than anticipated. He had always envisioned a ministry career, but never a specific department.

1890-1891
Promotion While Umbridge’s lateral move into the spot he’d been eyeing sat quite wrong with him, it’s short lived. Of course now the man is the head of the department and they aren’t too far off in age, so Lyall is miffed about his own chances of getting promoted. Umbridge is capable though, so Lyall keeps his grudge very well hidden and does an exemplary job as assistant head.

1893
Election Time? Though he hasn’t made department head yet and would likely have to start over in another, open department to do so, Lyall is considering running for minister in the current election. The goal was always to rise to the top and he may have a chance here. He starts thinking it through and is inclined to run, putting the pieces into motion.

AMBITIOUS | FLIRTATIOUS | GOAL-ORIENTED | CHARMING
Lyall comes off as all business at work. He is organized, well-spoken and reliable. He’s charming and knows how to work a room. He’s not a total asshole, but he can be a bit crass and a bit arrogant when given the chance, especially around his mates. He knows he’s good at what he does and it makes him a little prideful. However, he is a gentleman, has never crossed any unwanted boundaries and is a sweet flirt. He is respectful and chivalrous when the time calls for it, but work has kept him from having much of an actual social life. Ambition drives him, but his success has been mostly self-made and he thrives in his fast-paced work environment.
