Dec 31, 1894 - Foxwood Estate, Bath (Imperial New Years Celebration Ball)
Should auld acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind?

This year had been a whirlwind that had moved so fast, Basil wasn’t even really sure where time had gone or what had happened. He’d become less keen on New Years Eve celebrations these past few years, what with that chaos with his cousin, Gus, and the blowback that had resulted from both— but he supposed it was still a new beginning. A time to look back at one’s follies and try to resign oneself to being better the next year. And while his keenness had faded on family traditions and the like, he was still obligated as a Foxwood to attend this year’s celebration in Bath.

For the first time since his father’s death, his mother had deigned to throw a winter-themed ball to ring in 1895. (A note that had been made with less than subtle hints which made Basil rather suspect it was more coincidence or convenience her not choosing this date to host a ball in past years, rather than any actual ties to their father.) Nonetheless, he was obligated to attend and it was in his best finery and a too-tight cravat that the brunette made his way into the parlor hall.

The decorations were spectacular, even in Basil’s own rather uninterested esteem. The inspiration had been some imperial court or another and as such, the ballroom at Bath had been transformed with rich, opulent fabrics, Fabergé egg displays, snow-covered fir trees, and plush furs. He and his family had been instructed to wear deep jewel tones so Basil had opted for a dark blue. (He’d left the fur-lined cloak his mother had suggested by the wayside, feeling it a bit too… something for his tastes.) There were ballet performances throughout the evening and - perhaps the only really interesting facet as far as Basil himself was concerned - a caviar station that had been brought in from the Caspian Sea. (He quite liked caviar, actually.)

The dancers were in full-swing this late in the evening as Basil made his way along the perimeter of the ogling crowd towards a server. He was in search of more champagne. The ballroom just alongside was atwirl with skirts and trousers all moving in tune to a dramatic-sounding waltz he was grateful to have avoided. Reaching then for the very object of his interest, Basil’s hand collided with another and he looked up to find Anthony aiming for the same glass. He withdrew his hand and inclined his head awkwardly towards his cousin. “Please, have it,” he murmured quietly. He’d taken quite enough from this particular relative of late.

The heat that radiated off his cousin’s features as Anthony too withdrew a hand from the champagne glass was telling to the fact they had both been thinking the same thought, more or less. Things had been… awkward with Basil and the Foxwoods since that whole debacle with Ms. Malfoy, and Anthony hadn’t spent enough time in England this past year to really rectify it. A part of him did not blame Basil for reddening that way and retreating into himself, while another felt a soft pang for the guilt.

“Nevermind,” he tried, offering Basil a slightly cheeky grin. “There’s more than enough to drink for both of us at this celebration, Aunt Viola has made sure of that.” And make sure of it she had. His aunt had spared no expense for this rather opulent affaire, the dark tones and warm furs transporting one almost to another world entirely. Anthony himself had been instructed to dress to the theme and as such he’d chosen a rich green fabric with gold accents in his cuffs. He appraised his cousin and made to nod at the glass. “You have it,” he encouraged gently. “I fancy a taste of the Imperia Russian instead.”

It was at that moment however that a third hand came into the mix. Anthony and Basil both turned to watch as the glass was scooped out from between the both of them.

@Lady - Player Three has entered the chat.
Funfact: Imperia Russian Vodka is made from an 1894 recipe and uses winter wheat and glacier water.

Well wasn’t this a delightful New Years event? Decked out in a navy blue brocade ensemble lined with seed pearls and gold lace, and a caplet trimmed with fur, Sybella felt quite comfortable in the room despite its wintry theme and her preference for warmer weather. Even her brothers thought it a beautiful evening. She’d convinced them to make the trek over to England - first Hogsmeade for Christmas then Bath for New Years - and hadn’t regretted it since they stepped foot in the country. Normally the family insisted the daughter of the Capobiancos travel to Palermo when the time came for holiday festivities, however this year she’d wangled getting her brothers over however not her mother who had insisted the community need her philanthropy the most around this time. Madame Capobianco wasn’t entirely misguided on that score; every time Sybella was home, she found herself tugged along to numerous hospital charity luncheons, auctions to benefit the less fortunate in the neighborhood, and so many fundraisers that after everything she couldn’t keep her head straight.

To say she was no stranger to the life of a socialite was an understatement, but Sybella - although she was quite put out that mamma wasn’t here - found herself relieved to not have to play co-hostess and be on alert for any passing by socialite she might have to deign to entertain. It also meant that Sybella was able to imbibe a good deal than she might have otherwise in a hostess role.

In fact, after dancing with Sylvano and Luca she had a flush about her and was looking to retire her cloak to a house elf when the beverage table caught her eye. The Foxwoods had outdone themselves on the variety of lavish offerings provided. Decidedly, aside from their impeccable champagne, the Foxwood’s wine selection might have benefited from more Italian choices, but that was a faux pas she often was willing to overlook when not in her home country. Especially when here, the focus was one of Sybella’s favorite combinations: champagne and caviar; she would never say no to such a delectable pairing.

Sampling it was absolute heaven of course. The oily, salty pearls burst on her tongue immediately and she had to summon all the control she could to not sigh aloud in delight. While she was enjoying herself, she became aware of a conversation occurring on the other side of the table from her, where the champagne flutes had been placed. She wasn’t above interrupting them in order to obtain a drink now that she’d started in on the caviar, however there was a tenseness to the air around them that gave her pause (only a slight one, you understand, as there were more important things on Sybella’s list tonight than worry about offending two gentlemen).

Only, the sound of one of the men's voices gave her pause and Sybella discreetly shifted her position to peer around the cornucopia that had been obstructing her view. Recognizing Basil Foxwood immediately, she grinned before moving forward to whisk away the champagne flute that had been the source of apparent contention between the two. “I believe ‘ladies first’ is how you English say it, no?” She interjected with a laugh playing about her eyes as she lifted the flute to her lips. Oh, the caviar and champagne pairing truly was to be praised at this ball! “Good evening, Professor Foxwood,” Sybella added cheekily. “Enjoying your night I see.”

Sybella speaks with a slight Italian accent.
Her family is well known throughout the Sicilian Mafia; if your character is attuned within those circles, they might know who she is.
