8th April, 1894
Dear Mrs. Rowle,
When last we spoke I teased an invitation to a party where one could meet interesting people; I write to deliver on the promise. The timing of our conversation was quite impeccable as I am hosting a small gathering later this month; the twenty-seventh of April, in my country estate in Bristol. Address enclosed. If you attend and find the company to your tastes, I can perhaps assist you in securing invitations to similar parties moving forward.
This is an intimate event, with an exclusive guest list. Your discretion is appreciated — and because I am unsure whether or not you are well-acquainted with my wife, Angelica Selwyn, I will be direct in the hopes of preventing potential discomfort for all parties: she will not be in attendance on the twenty-seventh — indeed, as she lives primarily elsewhere she is unaware there is anything to attend. I should hate for you to accidentally mention it to her and be left in an awkward situation, conversationally.
Sincerely,
E. Selwyn
