The tears started then. They were slow coming at first, taking long enough down his cheek that they had time to become cool but still Konstantin felt as though they had been wrenched from him after so many months of deliberately chasing numbness. He had never thought that his sister, much loved though she was, would be the one to make him feel safe enough to-what? He certainly wasn't fine by any stretch of the imagination but something felt as though it had shifted - minutely perhaps, but nevertheless the tears felt like they had brought something forth.

"You're always kind," he said, leaning into Zelda's embrace. "And wiser than me by far. You took your chance."

"Oh, you're really going through it if you're calling me wise," Zelda jested, her tone still gentle. She kept her chin on top of Konstantin's head, and dangled her arms over his shoulders, fully embracing him. She wasn't so naive as to think that this would change Kons' mourning entirely — but hopefully it would at least help.

“Aren’t I just?” He replied with a brief bark of a laugh, reaching up to wipe his face and later, after he had begun to get a hold of himself, his sister’s hand. He got to his feet, disentangling himself from Zelda and taking a few steps away – any more of this and he might fall apart completely.

“Shall we go for a walk? Suddenly I feel like fresh air.” And a beer, he added mentally.

A walk seemed significantly better than Kons' rotting, and Zelda brightened. "Oh, let's," she said, cheerful. "But when we get back I am going to keep on trying to brighten the place."

Laughing again, still without much humour but with infinite fondness, Kons called his dog to his side - he might as well kill two birds with one stone, after all - and smiled at Zelda. The bright, caring little sister he had loved most of all had grown into as fine as woman as could be: how on earth had his missed it? Had he missed the rest of his siblings transforming before his eyes too? Perhaps finding out who they all were now would help him get back to something like himself?

It was better than wallowing, he supposed, but for now a walk as a good start.

"Let's go."
