Obscurials on charming?
#1
I was having a bit of a dive on HP creatures and found out about obscurials which I hasn't seen before and appears in similar lore to maledicti which AFAIK are allowed on charming.

Turns out what I had planned for Margaret already kind of runs close in line to Obscurials.

Persecution (in this case self persecution) and a wish to not have magic, dangerous emotionally charged magical outbursts, a plan (on my part) to have her as a bit of an outcast and failure as a witch only being in Hogwarts because she needs to learn control.

So my question is whether Obscurials are allowed on charming as I feel like she already is, or is becoming most of one in all but name. Happy to pop by ATO if needed similar to some of the other curse/magic types.

I also acknowledge that it means that Maggie's story ends badly for her probably before she even finishes her OWLS.

If you haven't watched Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them I'd recommend watching that before you try and go that route (whether it's allowed on site or not). That's where the obscurial lore comes from and would give you more of a sense of what they are than just reading the wiki. Like, they have no control over their magic - seems pretty unlikely that someone going to school at Hogwarts would become one. They're more the "my parents locked me in a closet for 8 years" type of children not just... kids with self esteem issues.

This is good advice and I shall watch that this week for some more info thanks.

As regards earned trauma, Arianna dumbledore became one as a result of an assault from some muggle boys which was a single very traumatic event. Maggie has the incident where she almost killed her baby brother which led to her being taken from her family by the ministry. She also has 2 other incidents where she caused damage to her family home and a injured a children's entertainer. So her self esteem issues are based on experience of her magic nature being her enemy.

But still seeing the film would be a good idea to check if that is exactly the direction I want her to go if they aren't site banned.

Yeah, I think Arianna Dumbledore had a lot more going on than just the one incident though. TBH I checked out of this franchise after watching Fantastic Beasts because the tie to JKR became unpalatable to me so I'm not actually up on all of it xD Like last I heard Arianna being an obscurial was just a fan theory not canon so I'm clearly a few steps behind.

The depiction of them in Fantastic Beasts though is pretty clear that if you're becoming an obscurial you're losing control of your magic, causing mass chaos and devastation, and you're imminently about to die... so I would not be at all surprised if staff wanted to give this one a hard pass xD your character would basically become the next Charming Mass Death event, but walking around and difficult to avoid rather than confined to a time/place. :P

Yeah, I shall look specifically at the mechanics, the version in the wiki is significantly watered down from what you describe from the film so perhaps there is a middle ground and I can make it an integral personality flaw rather than the full bore version.

I thought the whole thing with an Obscurial was it alienation and having their magical ability forcibly suppressed - and surely attending Hogwarts would mitigate that.

Also they usually die very young, Credance is an exception because he's managed to live much longer than expected

This is the official entry on them: https://www.wizardingworld.com/fact-file.../obscurial

and the official entry on Ariana doesn't mention her as an obscurial, a bit more regular PTSD-y - https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/...umbledores

Ah yeah, reading that source I can't see it working on charming except as an NPC event. I have been reading this under notable creatures tab and it is a significantly less terrifying entity, at worst coming out and clawing someone's face for hurting the host. What you linked is much more consistent with what Fortitude Greengrass described. So I will keep her as a simply bad witch with a lot of internalised distress rather than a monster that might cause existential problems for half the characters on the board.

Thanks both
