Charming, Ladies (Misses Spellcraft 1894)
#65
Lycoris was quite pleased to have made it this far. She cast her version of the bird-conjuring charm which would conjure up a flock of different colored canaries.

The judges took their time assessing the conjuring round, spending longer on fewer competitors before rendering their verdict.

Miss Edevane's non-verbal efforts had resulted in non-success, making the third-season debutante an easy elimination. Miss Stuart-Lane was, likewise, eliminated, but simply by virtue of not being as impressive as her competition. Frankly, all of the ladies remaining at this point were quite impressive.

Miss Farris' candles were a success, though they did extinguish themselves rather quickly.  That Miss Adebayo's conjuring was successful without a wand might have named her the round's standout if her conjuration were a bit more inspired. That honour went to Miss Lycoris Dempsey, whose technicolor birds (Fitz did not know what kind and certainly did not care enough to ask) wom the judges' favour.

And then there was the elder Miss Dempsey.

Bats. Fitz was not altogether surprised by Miss Dempsey's choice, but given the horrified looks of the judges, he was even less surprised when she was dismissed from the competition. Had it been a duel, and the bats feral, she would have done well, but in a competition such as this there was a fine line between impressive and horrifying.

Fitz addressed the remaining three competitors.

"For your final casting of this competition," the judges had asked him to say showcase, but the wizard was more inclined to call a spade a spade, "you will simply produce your best work in any of the categories conducted here today. The very best among you shall be named our winner."

Your character has 72 hours to post their final casting, after which the round will be scored. Highest score wins. please bold your chosen type of spell in your post—charm, transfiguration, illusion, or conjuring.

Having made it to the final round of the tournament, Iphigenia knew well that she had a choice to make.

Genia drew her wand out once again, wanting every advantage she could assemble. This was not class, or even an examination, where one's successes and failures faded away beyond the castle walls. There were spectators here, and their impression of her performance here would inform her success out there, amongst society.

Transfiguration was by far her area of expertise, where she was most likely to successfully execute her efforts, but with an animagus transformation off the table, charms and illusion, she thought, had greater opportunity to impress. Should she take the risk, the debutante wondered, and risk being bested by Matilda Farris? Genia did not think she could stomach it. Miss Lycoris, fine, but Matilda Farris?

Of course, playing it safe could be its own risk.

An illusion, then, she decided. The witch began the workings to create the illusion of a dome of night sky, replete with true constellations.

They were down to the final three. This ought to have been accomplishment enough for anyone, whatever happened now – but she could not help but notice just who else was left.

She had considered trying another illusion for the final round, but was not sure she could better herself in that arena, so – steeling herself anew, Mattie attempted to charm the grand piano stationed in the corner of the ballroom to play the first part of a Mozart sonata she knew by itself. Here went nothing?

She was in the final round! Honestly, Lycoris was just happy to be here and blissfully oblivious to the homoerotic tension between her fellow ladies left standing. Illusions had always been one of her best areas and she used them in her paintings often so that was what she felt comfortable going with. So she cast a spell that would have a beautiful siren of a mermaid 'swimming' through the air, weaving her way around the judges.

All three spells had Fitz's attention. For a moment, the wizard wondered if he oughtn't mention the young ladies before him to Felix and Freddie as, at least where decorum and magical ability were concerned, they were all exemplary here today.

Miss Adebayo had the 'worst' of it, her illusion impressive, but not quite as flawless as her earlier efforts. Even so, the wizard did not envy the judges their choices. Miss Farris' charm, while better executed, struck him as the least grand of the round. It was Miss Lycoris Dempsey who had excelled in both execution and impact, a fact for which the judges lauded her.

"While congratulations ought to be afforded to all three of our young ladies," Fitz declared (though young might have leaned in the direction of generosity where Miss Dempsey was concerned), "and each of you have excelled in your own moments, it is Miss Dempsey who the judges have decided performed most admirably in this final round—and so she who shall take the competition!"

A pause for the obligatory applause followed, after which the wizard saw to any remaining housekeeping for the event.

Well done! Lycoris Dempsey can take home the shiny new stamp—will PM the coding.
