History:
Tony's birth brough the tragic death of his mother. One thing that his father didn't quite forgive him for, though in truth the man was projecting his guilt onto his son. The Lawrences struggled to get pregnant after the birth of Viola, and Thomas was eager to have a son. Olivia was riddled with anxiety about delivering a healthy child and look where that got her.Personality: Curious. Open-minded. Friendly. Fox Mulder-y.
It was for this reason that his father didn't try for more children after the birth of Tony's half-brother in 1886, one year after his quiet wedding to Miss Georgiana Smith. The marriage was one of convenience, so the children wouldn't grow up without a maternal figure. Georgiana, though a warm step-mother, nonetheless wanted a child of her own. If it was up to Thomas, they wouldn't try for any children, scared as he was of losing another wife to childbirth.
So that was Tony's childhood -- mostly uneventful, comfortable but not frivolous. He always had an underlying sense of guilt for bringing his mother's demise and for that he wanted to please his father and his sister. Other times, he would retreat to himself and his books -- he loved reading anything about the natural world, as well as mysteries.
The big shock to the family was when in the summer of 1882, a man from a school called upon the family and informed them that Tony had magic. At first Thomas Lawrence thought him a lunatic, but then the man demonstrated this magic to the family, which all by didn't throw holy water at the flying teacups and saucer.
After that eventful morning, both Thomas and Georgiana were shocked and frankly rather scared. It was decided that Tony would be sent to reside with his late mother's sister, recently widowed herself, who was sadly never blessed with children. Away from the public eye, this magic nonsense would be forgotten.
Alas, much to Tony's joy, his aunt, while somewhat wary of this magical business herself, decided to support her nephew's true nature (probably because no one supported her true nature). As such, she and her spinstered best friend who'd moved in after Mr. Pearson's death, and who Tony was told to call Aunt Alice, decided to support and fund Tony's education at this 'Hogwarts' School of Magic.
