Did it look slightly more red hued? Maybe a little bit pink? Kitty squinted as if this might help her discern if the button had changed any shade at all. It didn't and it hadn't. Or at least it was likely wishful thinking that it had. Perhaps if she said it with a bit more poise? Kitty straightened her spell and imagined her wand were a tea glass as her mother wielded it in the drawing room. At least she felt a bit more eleagant as she cast the spell for the second time.

Callum’s ears were the color of his hair as he retrieved his button and tried again. Mama would be so disappointed… She was always good at transfiguration. Maybe if he tried to be a little less forceful the spell wouldn’t catch flame and send his button flying across the desk. Callum sucked in a deep breath and tried to steady himself. Then, with his eyes still closed, the Gryffindor lifted his wand. He could hear his classmates muttering under their breath, some louder than others, as they practiced the spell. One voice in particular stood out to him as golden hues reopened and he peeked over at Elisabeth Rosier. She was rather a snot, but her wand waving seemed elegant.

Callum wrinkled his nose and focused on his own button again. Maybe, just maybe, if he tried the motion the way she seemed to, he’d have a little bit better luck. “Colorvaria!”

Basil was still amused by all the various attempts he saw flying across the room, some more alarming than others. Eventually his gaze fell to Miss Arundell whose focus was unparalleled. He watched with a keen interest as her wand waved elegantly and her enchantment was vocalized. Then, without hesitation, her button changed from black to a shining Hufflepuff gold. “Well done Miss Arundell!” Basil exclaimed. “Five points to Hufflepuff, that was an excellent transfiguration.” He beamed at her proudly. “You may deposit your button back into the basket and be excused.”

He turned to continue his rounds between the desks, hands laced behind his back. Well, at least someone had a bit of success today. Hopefully the rest would soon follow suit!
