Unresolved Elopements From the Pink Letter Scandal! The pink letter scandal, in which numerous citizens of Magical Britain were left enamored of complete strangers—or in the worst scenarios, people they did know! While few cases of accidental (or "non-consensual", which many have argued is a better descriptor) elopements have been reported, even fewer have been resolved! Witch Weekly is giving you a peek into the new lives of these unfortunately newlyweds! Barnabas Skeeter & Maeve Connolly Despite misprints in other publications, it's not factually correct to call the newly-married couple "Mr. and Mrs. Skeeter", as our sources can confirm that the auror has made no efforts to legally change her name! If this isn't enough to give the public insight into the state of their marriage, their tumultuous relationship pre-elopement does the trick! When Mr. Skeeter campaigned for restrictions on female dueling, Maeve Connolly spoke out against him, proclaiming his beliefs as old-fashioned and discriminatory! We can't see a happy future for this couple! Edric Umbridge & February Lynch Unlike the previous couple, these newlyweds have made the best out of an unfortunate situation. Loyal readers may be aware of the history between the new Mr. and Mrs. Umbridge and the rumored affection that existed before their elopement. It would surely explain how the two were matched, and also why they failed to pursue an annulment. The question stills remains: How will the scandal affect the Head Auror—who was only appointed in mid-June of this year!—when his wife has been involved in other scandals, including the elopement of our next couple? Rufus Bixby & Fortuna Lockhart Though not directly a result of the pink letter scandal, we have reason to believe the recent elopement between the new Mr. and Mrs. Bixby was a means of preventing further reputation damage. Mr. and Mrs. Bixby were seen in each other's company—even without a chaperon once or twice!—during the Irvingly fog crisis during the summer. Asha Bilton & Tala Moreno Though by no means notable as individuals, what what this case interesting is who it impacted. Miss Moreno—now possibly known as Mrs. Bilton—was engaged to famed wandmaker Gervaise Ollivander prior to the scandal, and we have every reason to believe the match was dissolved. Mr. Ollivander has been seen looking terribly dreary in London pubs since the incident, a grave reminder that amortentia hurts more than the two under its effects! |

What would you do if your daughter or ward found herself in this unenviable position? | Fallen Women: Is Elopement Really The Best Case Scenario? After our feature on the Bixby elopement, dozens of readers wrote to express their belief that the former Miss Lockhart may have found herself in the family way, particularly after being seen in close quarters with Mr. Bixby on numerous occasions, with obviously sub-par chaperones attending her. These speculations lead our panelists to wonder: if Mrs. Bixby had surrendered her virtue, was eloping with Mr. Bixby in her best interest? If her alternative was to become an unwed mother, the answer would obviously be yes. No matter her background or how her natal family reacts to the news, no woman is capable of raising a respectable child without a husband. Consider the fate of Freya Trelawney, who had the support of her wealthy family even after multiple indiscretions and still ended up dying alone and miserable, having delivered into the world a small hoarde of impoverished and unfortunate children. If, on the other hand, Mrs. Bixby managed to escape an unwanted pregnancy, is she likely to find happiness in her hasty marriage? Consider that a husband who knows his wife to be a loose woman will never be capable of respecting her. Indeed, he is likely to feel he was taken advantage of or trapped into the marriage when his initial surge of lust burns away. A woman so married is unlikely to be allowed much in the way of freedoms that other married women enjoy, as her husband will not trust her--nor, it may be argued, should he. What should you do if, Merlin forbid, your daughter or ward ends up so spoiled before she has even become engaged? The best case scenario, we believe, is to immediately pack up and visit relations abroad. The more distant, the better, in this particular case. Once you've relocated to France, America, or farther afield, find the first eligible suitor to marry your daughter off to. Lowering standards to secure a quick match is advisable, and still preferable to a husband who is aware of his new bride's past indiscretions. |

Mr and Mrs Skeeter: Love Poems Not Potions One of the most talked about marriages from the recent pink letter scandal is that of Mr. and Mrs. Skeeter - or Mrs. Connolly as she has still insisted upon using rather than taking on the last name of her new husband. While this suggests a conflict between the couple, it might also just be a character flaw on Mrs. Connolly part. After all, it wouldn't be the first she has ever displayed. Between her career choices and the fact it required the twenty-seven-year-old - nearing twenty-eight if sources prove reputable - a letter dosed with amortentia to marry doubled with her family's strange ways in which the woman's husband comes to live with her family! we have seen plenty to make us question the validity of her choices and actions. Even more, light has been shined upon them with the recent announcement last month that those who could procure both their pink letters and present them to the Ministry would be approved for an annulment - though what it does to their reputations can little be fixed by the Ministry. While little has heard of many newlyweds taking advantage of this offer, we do know that the Skeeters did stop by the Ministry. However when asked to submit their letters, Mrs. Connelly could produce her letter, the papers that Mr. Skeeter handed over to his lawyer were revealed to be poems. Love poems directed towards Mrs. Connelly. While the couple seemed confused, they left the Ministry without what they had come to seek after a fight that involved the newlyweds arguing with the lawyer and Mr. Skeeter physically knocking his wife's wand from her hands. Last week, Witch Weekly shared a rumor they had heard about Mrs. Skeeter. This involved that she had in fact, intentionally had the letter sent to him as a ploy to get Barnabus Skeeter in a roll of his puppet where it is in fact now running the dueling commissioning office. Maeve Connelly wishing to do so might not be surprising to those who have passed followed developments of the political sphere as Mrs. Connelly. During Mr. Skeeter's campaign to continue the ban of women dueling, Mrs. Connelly was one of his opposers. The question is now, with Mr. Skeeter unable to produce his letter, was there actually one? Could he have given Maeve Connelly a potioned letter to remove who he viewed as a political enemy? Or were the tables turned and it was actually the new Mrs. Skeeter who had the letters arranged for her benefit? Or maybe there actually is love between the couple even if now only one sided? |
