Letter Archiving
#1
I know we don't and have never archived letters on Charming, but with many people relying on the new "thread log" function, I was wondering if we could possibly have a place to archive them to. I ask this because if your character is not the last to respond to a letter that you've deemed "finished", it will continue to appear on your list of "need replies" on the thread log when you go to look (see: Bella's). It's not an issue right now, but for a character who writes a lot of letters for whatever reason, it might eventually lead to a very cluttered need replies list!

I'm not sure how archiving them would help? My archived threads still show up in my postlog. Is there a function to filter them out that I'm missing?

Tbh if you glance at your post log and don't remember whether a thread/letter chain is finished or not I don't think clicking on it to find out is a big deal xD And I tend to let letters sit for a while and then come back to them when my character has something else to write about, so deciding when they're "finished" would be a challenge for me.

If you go down on your thread log and click on the "# ACTIVE · # CLOSED · # NEED REPLIES · # TOTAL", it will filter them out based on what you owe, what threads have been completed, etc.!

And I prefer to do different letters when the need for different topics/plot points arise so I can find them later on for whatever reason and have a direct reference instead of having to sift through other topics mentioned in letters, but that's just me! I also have a hard time remembering thread titles, so sometimes I can't remember if I'm clicking on a letter or actual thread because sometimes there's letters and threads going on simultaneously!

Yeah I totally missed that feature. xD It's pretty neat, props to staff for that one.

I think a better/cleaner solution would be to make the whole Written forum not included in that "Needs Replies" formula, because if we're proposing to archive letters then things posted on the Community Bulletin would also show up as "needs replies" until you archive them, and archiving them... entirely defeats the point of posting them in the first place. :P

I'm still opposed to the idea of archiving letters generally because it's not as though letters typically come to a solid conclusion the way threads do. And even if you're starting a new letter chain for different topics, it's not quite as clear cut as 'well I have now said everything I need to say about this, it is concluded!' For instance, in the recent Ben/Ellory fight letters, I stopped replying for a few days because I thought Ben was too miffed to want to write her, but then he got a letter from Art with more information and his muse changed his mind. :P

Hi all! So, we cannot stop letters from showing up in 'needs replies' unless we remove them from the threadlog entirely, which I personally think would be pretty inconvenient. We're also not going to start archiving them for the reasons previously mentioned.

What we could theoretically do is 'lock' completed letters, which might take them out of need replies? Thoughts?

I would totally be down for locking letters if it would make them work? I know some people might not like to archive them completely, but there are certain letters that are simple one-offs and don't require much further communication and I'd like those to not show up if it was a thing that could be done without too much fuss :P

I'm all for it if this can exclusively be a Sweep job ;)

AKA I don't care as long as I don't have to do it >.>

Since I am a sweep, and I am the one complaining, I would have no problem with this being a Bree job. :P

I don't have issues with it being a sweep job but folks best be bothering me about it because I don't read your letters and even when I do I'm certainly not going to decide when they're finished for you. :P

But yeah, locking them in place seems like the best solution. Archiving them seems like it would introduce a whole different dynamic and I'm not really keen on that plus if there was such a thing as 'dead letters' I would rage about it.

FYI, I do not currently have thread-locking powers in the post forum. :) Not sure if this is meant to be implemented or is still under discussion so just LMK when it's a thing I should be doing xD

HI GUYS. I have reached the point where letters showing up in my 'needs replies' thing has started to consistently bother me so I wanted to revive this conversation.

Proposal:
- letters are locked within the written forum and they stay where they are.
- this is exclusively a sweep job
- sweeps also get the power to unlock threads in the written forum
- we lock them after a month without a new post, and if anyone wants them back later they can either post in maintenance (& a sweep can take care of it) or they can just start a new letter thread. :P

Echoing the 1st post, as a sweep I wouldn't mind doing this! Should this follow through though, so sweeps could be alerted to things like this, we could go by people posting in maintenance so we know to archive them? If we wanted to take it a step further, we could have a maintenance thread exclusively for sweeps. On the other hand, this might open up the potential to more board clutter and confusion.

The reason I changed my mind about posting in maintenance from the original conversation is that it would make more work for members, whereas just locking them after a month is a net-zero workload for everyone but sweeps. Like imagine if we made people post in maintenance to tell us to archive dead threads instead of just doing those every month xD

That's true! It'd definitely be more of a hassle for members :P

I was also going to say that we could have a sweeps forum to try and organize and communicate, but we have the Skype group for that xDD
