The Veela Problem
Letters to the Editor

The news of the brutal veela attack on Mr. Albert Pettigrew has ruffled many feathers, most notably from the creature in question:

Dear Editor of the Daily Prophet,

I was appalled to read the article that you had published today, which was brought to my attention by my dear husband. I must directly inform you that I was not the attacker. I was the victim.

After having a bought a very lovely necklace in Wizarding London, being introduced to the fascinating place by my wonderful husband, I was robbed of my new and expensive jewelry, and pushed down in the process.

Frantic, I had begged Mr. Pettigrew for help, when he grabbed me. I instantly pulled my arm away, as a well raised, married woman, and he had the very nerve to grab me again. Such a dreadful act, along with his tone towards me, and I felt threatened and angered. After changing to my other form, I quickly calmed myself once I was free from his dreadful clutches.

What a terrible man, and then to lie and say that I actually was trying to seduce him. I am quite happy as a married woman, and my husband is far more superior to that idiot, who let the thief escape! Not only is there a thief on the loose, but a crazed man who may attack you as well.

With Hope For Understanding,
Mrs. Juniper Lyness

But what, if anything, does our human readership have to say about this danger that is once more in our midst?

To the Daily Prophet,

Once again I must question why these creatures are accepted into our society and married to our menfolk. How can we ever truly be sure that a fellow is in his right mind when taking on such a burden? If a man is given an annulment for being befuddled into matrimony, he should not be allowed to enter into such a union in the first place.

Sincerely,
It's Only Logical

To the Daily Prophet,

We treat this Juniper unfairly. Yes, she acted violently towards a gentleman, however one must remember that it is in her nature to do so. You do not blame the dog for its bark, after all; a veela is scarcely different. Perhaps her reaction is to the unnatural human captivity in which she finds herself. Veela, I think, are better off returned to the wilds where they belong.

Sincerely,
Only Natural

To the Daily Prophet,

Why was this creature not locked up?! If a man should come at another in such a fashion, surely there would be legal ramifications. If the veela would live as a "being", as so ordained by the Ministry of Magic, then she must adhere to our laws and face consequences for her actions. Perhaps there were law enforcement on the scene and they were too bewildered by her charms to do their jobs. If that is the case, we must reconsider our views on women who work, for it is plain that this problem is not going away.

Sincerely,
Lock Her Up!

What is plain to this paper is that the question of veela and their role in society is not going away any time soon.
