CYOA: Group C

The casino was unfamiliar to Ben and stood now as a monolith in Salem Square. The Ravenclaw felt a very prudent desire not to go inside, but curiosity propelled his feet forward as the young wizard crossed the threshold.

Edric was admittedly familiar enough with the casino, but there was no denying that there was something eerie about seeing it standing as the lone lit building. There were numerous reasons why this could be, but the events of the day had left him skeptical. He eyed the other men before nodding towards the building.

"Either the town's in there trying to make the best of the situation, or something's in there that should concern us," he observed. "Perhaps we should go in as an entire group this time."

The light from the torch was a welcome change as the group headed to the square. When they got there it became clear they wouldn't need it for much longer. The casino stood brightly lit before them.

Somersby nodded at Umbridge's comment, glad that they'd once again be staying together. It was logical, after all the more people together the more ways to solve a problem. They'd run into the most problems when they had spilt up. Well, none nature problems that was. Somserby walked with the group into the casino.

In time they ended up reunited with the rest of the group who appeared to be in a relatively similar state to when they'd parted which was good. Their luck might very well be at an end there, however. The way the casino was lit up so invitingly didn't sit well with him. The whole place felt like a ghost town and the casino looked like the epicenter of it all.

"No, I don't think we ought to separate again, not so soon anyway." He was definitely feeling more brazen after hours of wandering around aimlessly in the the dark, not that he being contrary. It looked to Theo like the casino was the only logical place to go next and while something horrific might be inside waiting to kill them all, it also might be the resolution they sought and if they didn't check it out then the fog would never lift. Suddenly he remembered the knife he'd brought along. He rummaged until he found it and brought it out. If there was danger ahead, hopefully it was stabbable.

Having spent a short while reuniting with the others, Tommy was somewhat at ease when he saw the casino. Oh, gosh golly – this was certainly a familiar sight. He didn’t come to this casino often though he did come a fair bit.

So when the other’s suggested they stick together and go in, Thomas was all for it. Without waiting for the others, Thomas smiled and began his walk into the casino.

Turning on the balls of his feet at the entrance, Tommy beamed toward the others; “Looks like we’re finally in luck!” He said before turning back and stepping inside the casino.

What could possibly go wrong in an ominously lit up casino in the middle of a death fog?

Luck? Conall snorted in abject disbelief at the latter man's comment, not about to waste his breath arguing aloud with such stupidity, but wanting to make his opinion of that remark clear all the same.

He wasn't sure he'd have had the words, anyway, slowing his pace to take up the rear now that they were heading into the Casino, suddenly sapped of all the momentum he'd had in getting them to the Square.

Perhaps it was the idea of been shepherded inside somewhere, like a cage or a trap. Battling the elements out of doors was one thing, even when they were unnatural, but - inside an ominously bright, garish sort of building? That was distinctly uncomfortable territory, and a prickling feeling crawled upwards at the back of his neck as Conall - begrudgingly - followed them all in.

The casino does not meet expectations.

Once Group C - or at least Turner, Mackay, and Tilcott; presumably the others follow - step inside and the front doors swing shut behind them, they will find themselves in a limestone concrete structure with etchings on the wall around them.

Time passes strangely in here.

There are three directional options: left, right, straight. The leftward path goes upwards, the rightward path goes downwards, and straight continues at level.

Apprehensively, Benjamin surveyed their new surroundings. It all felt wrong—wrong in his bones, not just the logical part of his brain. The hairs on the back of his neck stood on end, and the adrenaline coursing through him was making the boy lightheaded.

"Perhaps if we keep moving forwards, it will be more difficult for us to get lost?" the Ravenclaw suggested, clearly not entirely convinced of the fact but doubting splitting up again would do them any good.

Conall was distinctly uncomfortable about all of this, enough that he was starting to wish he'd never signed up for this.

He could only hope Eavan and her group had found somewhere more cheery to explore than this wretched place.

"If getting lost's all we're worried about -" Conall said grimly (was it all they were worried about?), "- shouldn't we follow the walls?" He jerked a thumb towards the righthand path. If there were more twists and turns to come, they might get muddled fairly quick by going straight along into the heart of the building; if they always stuck to the right turns, at least they'd keep their bearings somewhat. (Conall considered digging his compass out of his pocket, but he had an inkling this building would send the needle dubiously haywire, so didn't bother.)

The hairs on Edric's arm stood up the moment they all stepped into the building, and he was overcome with the strange and overwhelming desire to flee—a feeling he thought he'd long learned to suppress in dangerous situations. He eyed the paths while the men bickered, for once going off his instinct rather than what seemed logically correct.

"I agree with MacKay. There's something eerie about the middle path," he commented, though in all reality he felt little better about the other two options. He'd much rather stick to the walls; that there were limited directions they could be attacked from. "It's obvious we're being led somewhere—we need to stay alert."

Timothy was in agreement with what MacKay said and it seemed Umbridge was as well. The plan seemed to be to stick together which seemed the smart thing to do.

Stepping into the building Somersby was greeted by a site distinctly different than he’d imagined. The writing on the walls was curious and he wished he had some time to study it closer, maybe it held clues.

He had been so curious about the writing he’d almost missed the conversation. Were they really going to argue about every move? He wondered. Somersby himself had no further inclination to argue. While Ben’s option was logical, perhaps if they stayed to the right he’d have a greater chance to inspect the writing on the walls. “Going right makes sense too.” He added rather lamely. He didn’t like this place and the sooner they were out of it the better.

Theo eyed the three options before them and tried to find the inner auror instinct he was supposed to have somewhere to guide him. None of the options were instilling him with confidence but he did feel more inclined towards going straight ahead rather than going up or down. Or at least he was anyway until Umbridge expressed an aversion to it. His auror instincts had to be far more acute and fine-tuned than Theo's so he felt inclined to trust him on that merit alone. "If going right is going to take us below ground level then we may be burying ourselves alive, not that anyone really wants to be jumping out of a window, but I think I'd rather take my chances with a twenty foot drop than a curse or dangerous beast without magic at our disposal."

Okay.
This did not look like the casino he knew. It looked like some warped version of it, sure, but not the one he had come to know.

Stepping further into the building, Thomas looked around and narrowed his eyes toward the path forward as the guys started bickering.

"See, I think we should just walk forward. It's a casino even if it's a weird one. They don't put stuff upstairs or downstairs. Not many things. Most of the stuff - and I bet what we are here for - is in a main hall which," Thomas pointed at the path leading straight on, "I bet is there."

The group doesn't move. Neither does the casino-pyramid, although the front door has vanished.

If he'd hoped for a quick decision, he was proven wrong again as everyone felt the need to chime in with their opinion. "I'd rather take my chances with the dangerous beast than with the rest of you," Conall muttered to himself as the Auror pup agonised about the thought of going downwards.

Conall was about ready to bury himself alive.

And that was before Mr. Bring-My-Broom-Along offered his pearl of wisdom. "Son, if you still think this is a casino, you need your sodding eyes fixed," he cut in, right as the door vanished behind them. Some bloody casino this was. Letting out a sigh, he added curtly: "Let's move." He didn't care which fucking way anymore.
