Private
Mr. Ezra Applegate vs. Mrs. Rose Hart
#1
April 27th, 1894 — Hogsmeade Memorial Assembly Rooms, Hogsmeade

Charles found himself fighting the urge to stare at the woman preparing to duel an Unspeakable. Her exceptional lack of stature was noteworthy on its own but he got the distinct impression from looking at her that she was bad news. He wasn't sure how much of it was to do with the way she held herself or whether it was largely down to the way she was dressed. He didn't know who she was or what she did but he took an immediate disliking to her and not only because she had the audacity to duel whilst being a woman.

With the formalities out of the way, Charles indicated for Mr. Applegate to go first. Poor Mrs. Hart was about to learn the hard way why women ought to stick to feminine persuits.

Ezra recognized the proprieter of the True Hart, but would just as soon pretend he didn't, especially in such a public arena.

After giving her a perfunctory bow he turned his attention towards casting. He was always of a mind that duels should be filled with interesting magic, and so his first attack was intended to make the ground below her erupt in lashing vines which would immobilize her before she had a chance to properly counter.

Rose wasn't sure what had possessed her to participate, she was decent at spell work, anything which facilitated the safety of her ladies she used on a regular enough basis. Her stinging hex was above average. She recognised the young man opposite her, but then what young gentleman of a certain age didn't deserve an evening of pretty company and a fun evening out.

Rose attempted to cast a shield charm, her go to when one of her magical clients got a bit too hansy

Charles caught himself about to start shaking his head at the predictability of what he was witnessing. To absolutely no one's surprise (he was convinced) Mrs. Hart's shield charm wasn't up to the task of seeing off Mr. Applegate's spell and so now he was forced to watch the suspiciously attractive woman get wrapped up in vines which she wolly deserved. The first round is in Mr. Applegate's favor. Please begin the next, Mrs. Hart. This at least promised to be over in a few more minutes.

Rose wasn't entirely surprised by her loss, but she gave Mister Applegate a nod with a sly smirk. She gave Mister MacMillan, a similarly feline inclination of the head as he instructed her to begin the next round. She attempted to cast a stinging hex at Mister Applegate as neatly and quickly as possible.

He was pleased that he'd taken the point, and that his spell had been as boisterous and disruptive as he had been hoping for; she was quite caught up by the time the plants finished growing. Unfortunately it was difficult to be flashy with defense, particularly when her simple hex left little time to react. Ezra attempted to disarm her before she could finish the spell.

Mrs. Hart wasn't fast enough to cast before her wand was ripped cleanly out of her hand by her opponent. It was as decisive a victory as Charles had anticipated. Hopefully Applegate would have a more deserving opponent next time. Mr. Applegate wins the duel!
