Did You Know?
Braces, or suspenders, were almost universally worn due to the high cut of men's trousers. Belts did not become common until the 1920s. — MJ

Billie Farrow vs. Hesper Gamp

Was there anything more pointless than watching children duel? They barely knew their hexes from their counter-jinxes and the girl would probably cry when she lost. Besides which, he had a truly terrible hangover and no desire to hang around here longer than necessary.

"Farrow," he said distractedly. "You may begin. Try to go easy on her, ey?" He added with an unpleasant grimace as he looked between them with misty eyes.

Billie was positively brimming with excitement. She was certain she wasn't going to get far in the competition, but she was determined to try. Not to mention that Gus had signed up for the adult duels, and she was set on being just like her when she grew up. That meant she had to practice somehow!

She smiled at Hesper, recognizing her from when they shared classes the previous year. She liked her well enough that she wasn't about to yell some sort of boasting threat at her before the duel began. Certain Gryffindors, well, that was another story.

Billie gave the judge a friendly smile and stood a bit taller since it was clear he didn't know her true gender. That gave her a confidence boost. She nodded to him, and then quickly decided on a spell, "Tarantallegra!" She called out, carefully tracing the wand motion they'd been taught. It seemed like the safe option; she didn't actually want to hurt Miss Gamp.

When everyone tells us what we can be
How can we rewrite the stars?

Hesper didn't know Billie Farrow very well but she knew of her very well; she found her fascinating in the same way one might find a senile house elf fascinating. Hesper took great pains to hide her scorn - it wasn't personal after all, she just so happened to be the epitome of everything Hesper had been trained not to be. It wasn't seemly to be so unladylike, so free.

Miss Farrow probably dueled in an equally unrestrained manner which meant she'd have to do more than half-assed decorative spells if she didn't want the younger girl to beat her. Immobulus! Hopefully her spell would hit first.

As Miss Gamp's legs began to spasm in earnest Enoch signed and reaffirmed to himself that this was why they shouldn't have young ladies involved in duelling. It was undignified, unsightly and, frankly, he doubted it would do much for their later marriage prospects.

"Farrow takes the round. Miss Gamp," he countered the curse nimbly. "The advantage is yours."

When everyone tells us what we can be
How can we rewrite the stars?

Hesper's face went bright pink as the effects of Miss Farrow's spell took effect. She hoped her friends weren't watching. She really hoped Sirius wasn't watching. Although the spell was lifted quickly it still felt like several minutes to her.

Between the mortifying jig-like dance she'd been forced to do and the fact that she ought to be wiping the floor with Miss Farrow because she was a year above her, Hesper's ego was smarting and she was more than a little flustered. She wasn't usually a malicious person but she'd be lying if she claimed spite hadn't motivated her in choosing her next spell. She pointed her wand squarely at her opponent and uttered the incantation for a spell that would make Miss Farrow's hair start growing rapidly, not stopping until the spell was interrupted and then she'd be left with more hair than she'd know what to do with. Aside from the spite motive, it ought to make it very difficult for Miss Farrow to cast anything if she couldn't see and her own hair had become a trip hazard.

Billie felt a little bit bad that she'd made Hesper look ridiculous. Maybe she should have gone for a more standard offensive spell, although, in her mind, hurting another student seemed like the greater of two evils. She shot the girl an apologetic look, either way; she truly hadn't meant to embarrass her.

Unaware that Hesper was about to cast a spite spell, the Hufflepuff pursed her lips while she decided on her next course of action. "Expelliarmus!" The disarming charm was one she was very comfortable with, and it wasn't likely to embarrass Miss Gamp if it was successful. At least, she hoped so.

Narrowing his eyes Enoch watched as Farrow's hair began to grow out rapidly and he sighed. This was going to take far longer than he thought and he couldn't even amuse himself at another's expense when the image was so undignified: with a grimace he reversed the effect, wondering idly where Farrow's spell had gone in the end, because it certainly hadn't gone anywhere near Miss Gamp, until the hair had returned to it's original length.

Perhaps it was a little shorter than before? His concentration wasn't at peak so it was a distinct possibility but he quickly dismissed the thought.

"Miss Gamp takes the second round. Farrow, when you're ready you may begin the decider."

Of all the flippin' spells.

Billie's hair being forced to be girlishly long was one of her biggest nightmares. When she had agreed to reveal her true gender, her hair had been a matter of contention. Under no circumstances was she going to grow it out. That would only serve to get in her way and force her to pin it up in idiotic ways.

Such a spell was a slap in the face. She had been trying to be nice.

Now, it was personal.

Out of a clear need for revenge, Billie cast the instant scalping hex to hopefully remove all of Miss Gamp's hair. It was one of those spells she had learned with her 'study group.' If study groups were meant to look up basic (and mischievous) hexes and practice them on one another, that is.

Initially Hesper felt a sense of smug satisfaction as she watched Miss Farrow's hair multiply in length a hundred fold. It vanished, however, when she sensed something change in her opponent. It was more instinct than conscious observation but she felt suddenly quite sure that she'd done more than just make Miss Farrow's hair grow long, something that was possibly a little bit cruel. Maybe it was her conscience or maybe it was something about Miss Farrow's reaction - she didn't seem happy about it but that was hardly surprising.

She was probably imagining it, what was the problem anyway? Miss Farrow was a girl, wasn't she? Girls had long hair and she ought to look more ladylike. Rictusempra! She still couldn't quite shake the guilt so she thought to win the duel with the tickling charm. She'd have no reason to feel guilty if Miss Farrow was laughing.

There was an audible gasp from the crowd and Enoch's red-rimmed eyes went wide as Miss Gamp's hair vanished entirely from her head - whatever spell she had been intending to use was lost when the young lady realised her newfound status. His lip curled in distaste: girls simply should not duel and he was just as disappointed in Farrow for rendering the girl so hideous as he was with Miss Gamp for opening herself up to becoming a spectacle.

He reversed the spell with a flick.

"Farrow takes the round and the match. Perhaps you will think twice before entering next time Miss Gamp."
