Madam Sykes,

I suppose you've heard the news—everyone else has—about my cousin at this point. I almost drowned my pet canary in a fit of rage, but then I thought of you and relaxed my nerves. I hope your summer has been better thus far.

With well regards,
Miss Holly Scrimgeour

Dear Miss Scrimgeour,

I confess when I saw the paper this morning I was immediately concerned for your state of mind so I am greatly relieved to hear from you and that you have managed to control your impulses. I’m sure your canary is even more relieved.

Were you close to your cousin at all? I hope you don’t mind my asking but I can’t recall you ever mentioning her to me.

Sincerely,
C. Sykes

Madam Sykes,

I was a small child when my cousin came back into the family, but my father was never so reckless as to allow me much contact with her. Still, she wears the family name and thus her actions have a direct impact on my future.

The fate of my betrothal is my biggest concern, though any attempts by the Mrs. Macnair to break it would be a severe act of hypocrisy.

Sincerely,
Miss Holly Scrimgeour

Dear Miss Scrimgeour,

I would not presume to guess what Mrs Macnair might do but, for what it’s worth, I don’t see how any of this could reflect badly upon you or your side of the family. Your cousin’s actions are not your fault, nor should you allow others to let you feel that they are.

That being said perhaps you could write to Mrs Macnair and humbly - humbly Miss Scrimgeour! – explain to her that you have no contact with your cousin? I don’t presume to understand betrothals very well but I assume that your father and Mrs Macnair will make the decision so this may be your only chance to argue your case.

Humbly though.

Sincerely,
C. Sykes

Madam Sykes,

I'm not sure it's my place to write to Mrs. Macnair, as I'm sure my father would appreciate being able to explain the situation rather than leaving the responsibility to his twelve-year-old. Unfortunately, that does little to soothe my nerves; one of my faults is my inability to trust anyone apart from myself with my fate. I just feel so angry.

Sincerely,
Miss Holly Scrimgeour

Dear Miss Scrimgeour,

I understand that your conundrum may leave you anxious but I would advise not acting rashly. Focus on your studies if you can, a book if you cannot and if both of them fail then I would recommend a journal for your thoughts. Keep it safe but it can act as a repository for all your best and worst thoughts and when you read it back to yourself later you may begin to understand your own mind a little better.

After this initial bump I do hope you have a pleasant summer. Feel free to write to me whenever you wish, your owl seems very adept at finding me.

Sincerely,
C. Sykes
