Hi! I haven't rp'd people in a couple years now and I have only minor experience with hogwarts rps, but the time period and lore and such for this site has gotten my interest piqued -- so I thought, almost a new year, why not look around? Anyway, I did and I'm interested in making a character for here, but I still have questions despite all of the helpful links you guys have given--which really answered a lot of my questions! Before I do that, though, I figured I'd ask some questions up-front. (These questions are regarding a few different character ideas I have, so they're not all for the same character and are open to change or omission)

1. What resources do you use for making wands for characters? (Hopefully I didn't miss anything about those somewhere)
   
2. If I want a character to fill a staff position in Hogwarts for support staff (e.i. Caretaker, Librarian or House Matron), would I need to do something special to apply for that outside of what is listed next to the Occupation?
   
3. Do Hogwarts staff live on campus? (I vaguely recall they do in the movies, but think its better to double check than assume)
   
4. Would a pay increase of a male relative -- the only living male relative -- of a female character to Level Three (like an Auror) be enough to raise a WC family to MC? Thinking along the lines of WC female character living with her single brother (oldest living male relative) who is an Auror...
   
5. How would a woman raising two, much younger brothers (parents dead), affect her reputation? Would that depend on her class?
   
6. Could a squib become infected with lycanthropy?
   
7. Could an upper class family keep the fact one of their own was afflicted with lycanthropy hidden from the rest of society?
   
8. Can I get an idea on what a WC woman would face a transition to MC society? I know it wouldn't be a pleasant thing, but some specifics would be nice--would she need a coming out ball? Would she have to learn knitting? Etc.
   
9. I saw, in the census roster, a roster that characters were divided into female, male and an "n" categories -- I wasn't sure if, given this is set in VE, nonbinary characters allowed but that looks like it might be the case! Is that so? If so, how are nonbinary individuals treated in rp given the time period? (not taking about in y'all's community cuz you guys seem delightful, but in the rp world of Charming)
   
10. On a similar note: I know in the 19th and 20th centuries (maybe earlier and/or later than that), that anxiety disorders and depression and other such mental illnesses were categorized as things such as hysterics, but that's all I really know. Any advice on how such a character would be treated in VE, how that would affect their reputation, and so forth? Anything would be appreciated on this front, even just guidance on where to find such info!
    

Sorry for all the questions; I might have more later on but that's it for now, promise. On another note: it's been ages since I did a jcink rp, though, and I'm not the most code-savvy person, so I'll probably need help as I go along later -- so sorry in advance for that too.

Hi Bones! Excited to hear you are interested.

For your questions that I'm able to help with:
1. I tend to use pottermore wand information as a starting point.
2. Nope. Just post your reserve in the occupations thread, I believe vacancy dates are listed on that thread as well to help develop your history as to when they would have been able to take the position up.
3. Yes, although if they have family they have the option to live at home (I believe).
5. I dont think it would, but maybe go with a 9 to play it safe. Staff would be able to answer that one better to me. So I defer to their judgment.
Side note on knitting, wc would probably know how to knit. Embroidery may be more of a mc UC thing though.

For some of the questions Fallin hasn't already answered, my quick takes:

4. Level Three/being an Auror alone isn't quite enough to raise a family from WC to MC, that would take a profession at Level Two - this info and more is at the bottom of this page!
5. It shouldn't affect her reputation negatively! (Unless she's doing a very bad job of it, of course xD)
6. My instinct is no, if they lack magical blood they are likely to be killed by a werewolf much the same as muggles.
7. Yes, if they make the effort to and depending on their occupation! We have had werewolves of all classes, UC might find it easier to exist secretly than some.
9. Yes, we allow non-binary characters! Most of these are still perceived as one gender or another to fit into ~VE society's parameters, but privately identify otherwise. It might affect their reputation more negatively the more overt they are about it.
10. Generally I just play these as undiagnosed, but here's a basic article on "melancholy" / depression.

8. I play a character (Dionisia Fisk) who was WC most of her life and then married into the MC. Depending on how a woman rose to the middle class I imagine the road would be different. WC women who married into the MC would be expected to act as a MC wife regardless of their background—although I imagine the road bumps would be on matters of etiquette and society rather than practical matters that WC women would have experience with like knitting and sewing. A woman whose male guardian rose to the MC would likely struggle socially but also get a governess to help. There was also a huge variety in what WC and MC looked like—some WC were dirt poor and others lived decent lives but wouldn't be able to keep their comfort if they lost their jobs. Some MC looked closer to UC but were too "new money" to be lumped in with them, while some MC were shop owners who relied on their businesses to keep their family afloat. It all depends on the individual circumstances.

If I remember correctly Victorian laws would've dictated that any underaged children would have been given under the custody of the closest male relative even if there were closer female relatives. Ie children would go to a distant male relative not a vlose aunt if the parents died??? But could get around that in a distant authority figure sense where she isnt on paper but still does it.
6. According to Rowling, muggles can become werewolves but they survive the transformation at a far lower rate than muggles. So i would take it that applied to squibs as well. They would not become wizards though, I don't think??? Don't quote me on that last bit.
7. Yes! Morwenna Skeeter , while not upper class, is a hidden werewolf.
8. It would depend from person to person. Middle class is a really large range as it would contain the most amount of people. Some need to work to live,  other women have enough money to be socialites. So you'd need to decide where on that scale yours would fall. But regardless reputation is everything. It would be known where she came from and some may not see past that. And it would also depend how old she is. After a certian age, a woman was considered unmarriable and therefore it would be a waste of money to have a coming out.

To further answer your UC werewolf question, the answer is yes! Charles Marshall is my UC secret werewolf. My main experience has been, having a thought out explanation for how the individual/their family hides it (Charles's family doesn't even know!).

I know you didn't ask, but I generally recommend adopting from an existing family/plot when first starting, as that's always seemed to be the easiest way to gain quick commections. Definitely not a requirement though! Original characters are also wonderful, I have made and seen many.

As the resident werewolf expert (lol) - I have read that bit that Nichole's talking about and interpreted it to mean that Muggles typically don't survive werewolf attacks because of two reasons: they don't have the ability to fight werewolves off mid-attack the way witches and wizards do, so their attacks are typically more gruesome; and they don't get fancy magical medical attention, so they die more often. So I would think with a squib it would depend on the circumstances - was someone with a wand nearby enough to save them from being killed in the initial attack? Did they get to a healer fast enough? If so they probably could become a werewolf, if not they're dead.

But this is spitballing based off of one throwaway comment from JKR, who is notoriously bad at having consistent canon anyway, so I'm happy to be overruled by staff on this one :)
