Ladies Duel: Miss S. Whitledge vs. Professor A. Vorona
#1
6th March, 1891 — Hogsmeade Memorial Ballroom
He hadn't taken Arithmancy in his day, but Elsie had, and he was fairly certain it was full of numbers and complicated gibberish a theoretical subject, so he was looking forward to seeing if Miss Whitledge might actually stand a chance against the older witch, be she professor or not.

Tybalt raced through the rules and then waved at Miss Whitledge to commence with the first spell.

To be placed against a professor in her first adult dueling tournament was both nerve-wracking and exhilarating. Her last duel had seen her claim victory, and she was determined to claim that again. Transfiguration spells would benefit her most in this competition, but she had further tricks up her sleeve.

For her first spell, she cast a fog to surround the two of them to throw off Professor Vorona's aim. She moved cautiously out of the other witch's direct aim, hoping her movement had been masked in the fog.

Being paired with a witch barely out of school was interesting, but Angelica wouldn't underestimate the girl. Angelica herself was all venom and fire at that age. Grinning as the unfortunately-named young woman cast her magical fog, Angel chuckled.

She'd save the literal sparks once she got a measure of the girl. Pointing her wand to the ground, she cast a silent freezing spell in a wide arc across the floor before shifting toward where her opponent previously stood. Hopefully, Miss Whitledge was watching her step.

Professor Vorona had not even needed to dispel the fog to do her damage; the floor froze under her opponent's feet and the dull thud as Miss Whitledge slipped to the ground was audible for all to hear.

Tybalt vanished the fog, gave Miss Whitledge a moment to get to her feet again, and said, "Professor Vorona wins the first round, and may cast next."

Angelica had the decency to make sure the younger witch had regained her footing before resuming. While keeping an opponent on their toes or backside was fundamental, this was not a duel of life or death and some restraint was required.

As soon as she was given the cue, Angelica summoned and unleashed a murder of crows - a bit hyperbolic, given the setting - upon her opponent. Time to up the stakes.

While the help was appreciated, Sweetie also did not appreciate being babied. Would her opponent have acted this way if she was older? Or a man? But she kept a calm face as she attempted to turn the crows into snow.

Their attempts were more closely matched this time; some of Professor Vorona's crows melted away into a gentle snowfall. But Miss Whitledge's spell had not transformed them all, and - vanishing the rest of the birds encircling her - Tybalt pronounced the Professor the winner.
