I told her to cut the bullshit and either tell me what was going on or stop writing, and she wrote and told me that her father tortured her and she went to Scotland. So.

I mean, that can't be true, right? That's not a thing that just happens to people. Even crazy people with crazy families. Right?

So I've been thinking about this and the way I see it, there are some options.

1) S is lying, probably for attention or for the mystique or whatever she thought she was achieving with the vague letters last week;

2) S doesn't think she's lying but she's being hyperbolic because she's an emotional teenage girl and she wants me to feel sorry for her;

3) Something happened but rather than tell me what it really was she's decided to say she was tortured and ran away because she doesn't want to tell me the truth;

4) S's father is actually a psychopath and he did really do that.

She asked me not to talk to the Ministry, but I don't even know whether I could if I did want to. It's not as though I'm on great terms with the department of magical law enforcement after last week, and I don't have any proof that anything happened. I've got a maybe-true-maybe-not letter from a probably-hysterical teenager. But on the other hand it's not like I can just wash my hands of all this and call it a day because there's a missing persons investigation open on her. She just told me where she was (sort of; I guess 'Scotland' is better than nothing?) and aren't I sort of obligated to tell someone that she's not dead?

(As a side note I ran in to her sister (previously unknown sister) and may have kind of already told her that S wasn't dead, but it's not like I had the letter I got from her in my back pocket or anything - does that count as telling someone? Probably not, she's another (potentially hysterical) teenage girl so it's hardly as though secondhand information from her counts as evidence)

Anyway it's pretty clear that she at least ran away from home, and it sounds like it was because of something her family did. If she was just running away to go become a muggle potato farmer for the sake of it, or something, I don't think she'd have been that cagey about where she was or how she'd gotten there. Not with me, anyway. I mean, who would I tell?

I think it's a very exciting mix of 2 and 3. I suppose that 4 is possible, but, well - honestly, why would she tell you and only you if that was the case? No offense, but she cannot possibly expect you to go after her father if it is true - she'd tell the aurors. I think she's just being dramatic. You should wash your hands of the whole thing.

I'd forward her letters to the Ministry and call it a day. Or forward them to her sister and call it a day. Scotland's large as all hell, if she's not in Hogsmeade it would take her father ages to find her even if she is in that much trouble.

She specifically asked me not to tell the aurors, which does... sort of make option 4 seem unlikely. If she was really running away because she was afraid for her life, she would want law enforcement involved as soon as possible, right? So she's probably being melodramatic and doesn't want things to get out of hand. But if she didn't want things getting out of hand she shouldn't have told me she was tortured.

Also I've decided she's definitely crazy. I'm just not sure whether she's unhinged-crazy or obsessive-liar-drama-queen-crazy.

I don't know. If she's making this up and I give her letters to the aurors and they start investigating her father for crimes he didn't commit, then suddenly I'm involved in this — and I'm definitely feeling like I'm really done with wanting to be involved in this.

As far as I know I'm very done with her — though I thought that the first and second time, too, so who knows. The last time I ended up getting re-involved was because she was supposedly dead, though, and 1) that got me arrested and 2) it didn't help, so I don't fancy I'll be doing it again.

Are you going to give it back? I mean. I guess they probably can't do anything about it at this point, if you still have it days later. Can they? I don't know that much about healing.

But it'd be weirder to keep it. I mean you can't very well put it on a shelf or anything. You're going to give it back, right?
