As partners went, he could certainly do a lot worse than Camille Scrimgeour. Miss Wood, for example, lacked the breeding and status necessary to be remotely useful, though none of the options struck Elijah as truly desirable. Perhaps it was that dancing was tedious, or perhaps that Elijah was just too full of himself. Regardless, the Slytherin would not be displeased for the lesson to draw to a close.

At the Gryffindor's greeting, Elijah responded with a small bow before beginning to lead her through the dance with a reasonable degree of not-sucking.

"Truly, I think some of us ought to be excused from such a lesson, don't you, Miss Scrimgeour?" the wizard asked as they moved.

As his former partner fled to a more appropriate partner switched partners Rudy tried not to pay attention to the fact he was left standing by himself for just a little bit longer than was probably appropriate but who could really blame them. He was a farm boy by nature and while he was very good at not stepping on people dancing had never really been something he intended to really learn. It had nothing to do with animals after all. The only type of dancing he did on a regular basis was with his baby sister Sarah and swinging her around in the air did not count.... And while he had the strength to do so with any of his partners here he had a feeling that their teacher would frown upon such things.

So he stood awkwardly trying to figure out where he put his arms, feet.... legs... so he didn't injure anybody spectacularly and look anything more than incredibly awkward dancing with a girl over five feet shorter than him.

He really wished he'd tried a little bit harder to beg to sit out and caught sight of Ric who was having similar issues though at 4 foot two he wasn't that much shorter than his partner.

He winced, and tried to smile apologetically at his new partner. If he didn't think he'd get into trouble he would've suggested her standing on his feet because his previous partner had been far too interested in where he put his than her own. His ears reddened as he looked at the girl and he tried to avert his eyes.

"This is so stupid." He muttered. "When am I ever going to need to dance?" He tried not to add, his private, most inner most thought who would ever actually want to dance with me? He would much rather be anywhere else right now but especially in Care of Magical Creatures..... He wondered what exciting thing Professor O'Connell would teach them next...

Social Class:  Middle Class
General Grasp of Etiquette: Okay - But he's kinda screwed since he's 10 feet tall and nothings going to make this okay.

The absolute last thing Sisse wanted to do was discuss this with Cameron. Not only did his words hurt, so did the thought of what Sloane might have said and how it might have been twisted from what she meant. Trying to maintain the placid look on her face Sisse started, “[i]I’m not -[/b]” But was spared any further discussion by Mrs. Benwick.

It didn’t seem to matter how much Sisse had tried to keep them from losing points, Cameron also ran them right into the instructor and which of course lost them points. But perhaps the matron was not entirely without heart as she gave Sisse a sympathetic look and rewarded the points back. At least it hadn’t been a total loss of points. She gave the professor a grateful smile.

The moment the music ended Sisse was left standing alone, Cameron making it very clearly obvious there was something wrong, or that he was embarrassed by Sisse. Well, let them think what they’d like, Sisse thought, tilting her chin into the air slightly, trying to affect an air that it wasn’t hurt Cameron was running from.

While Sisse did not know Mr. Selwyn well, she was grateful for his quick appearance by his side, how he covered for Cameron’s retreat, she was even gratified for the look he gave Cameron. Her other friends might not like Mr. Selwyn, but Sisse had never truly had any reason to dislike him. Indeed, over the years she had been careful to be polite to him - if nothing more simply because she did not wish anyone in their group to dislike her for her friends, but also because she had never had any reason not to treat him politely. Sure she’d heard rumors and didn’t agree with much of what he said, but that hardly seemed to matter at all in the moment.

Slipping her hand into his outstretched one, Sisse gave him her charmingest smile, hoping to show the world that she was hardly rattled by anything of this. No, she would see poised, collected, and like the gentle charming debutante she was supposed to become. “I would love to.” The music began and Sisse soon found herself grateful for the change in partners. She could actually look him in the face and converse, she didn’t need to worry about her toes or his ability to lead, after Cameron it felt like a treat. Afterall, Sisse did love to dance.

Sybille's first partner was tolerable and she found that Aunt Jade's lessons this summer had paid off. It ended soon enough and she found herself in front of Mr. Sweeney. At least she was farmiliar with him, she enjoyed chatting with him at supper and in the common room, and always felt rather sorry for him and how he stuck out.

"It will be alright." She assured him as she held her hands out. If he trend on her foot maybe she wouldn't ever be able to dance again and her family would allow her to not debute after all and open her bakery? "It's a good skill to have." She admitted as kindly as she could, hating that she sounded like the rest of her family. "Even if it is only to surprise people." She shrugged, honestly little bothered by it. She wasn't waiting for anyone to sweep her up like a prince, all she wanted was to bake.

Sisse, like the other Gryffindor girls had been effectively ignored by Cad. Privately, of course, he thought they were beneath him- half blood middle class girls? Well of course they were. But Cad could play the chivelrous gentleman better than most young men his age - he had his fathers gift for sweet talk and an eye for pretty women -half bloods and all , and his mothers gift had a gift for reading people that was second to none.

'Is everything all right Miss Thompsett? Mister Gillenwater was not being rude or cruel?' he asked an expression of concern directed at his dance partner, as they began to move through the steps of the next dance, Cad leading confidently.

While Sisse had no reason to be rude to Mr. Selwyn she also had no reason to spill out the secrets that now lingered between her friends and her, nor was she included to admit anything was wrong one way or another. There were very few people she'd ever confide in, the rest of the world she knew to put a smile on her face and to never falter.

"Of course." She answered, because as far as anyone knew everything was fine. With all the grace of a lady Sisse smiled up at Mr. Selwyn and changed the topic. "Are you looking forward to the switch to the polka?" Sisse changed the topic as they spun through their waltz with much more grace then she had last been spun around. She suspected all the boys would be grateful when Mrs. Benwick switched them from the waltz to the polka in a fortnight.

Cad wrinkled his nose, 'No' he laughed, 'There is something about the Polka that I don't like.' he raised his feet high, as though about to launch into the Polka - 'It's too....' he let the sentence languish in mid air between them - it would be rude to say that the polka was a poor person dance, done by the rich to play at being jaunty and 'of the people'. 'Eh...it's a bit too rambunctious for me. he finished, 'Besides, it doesn't give you much chance to talk' he added quickly and with a disarming smile at his new companion. 'Is it a dance you particularly enjoy?' he asked diplomatically.

"Would you be willing to tutor me again?" Joella asked. She did need the help and so far Mister Ruskin had the rare privilege of not being a total annoyance to the girl annoyed by most things in life. She would rather deal with someone she knew to be decent at teaching her things than some moron that was an unknown variable in her life.

Joella did find Mister Ruskins hands a touch cold but she did not mind that too much considering she knew that he was a half-vampire. It was part of his being, she figured and best not reacted to. Though Joella never reacted to anything in general but that made showing mild consideration to the half vampire boy all the more easier.

"Do you do much dancing?" He was of higher status in society than her so she figured he did.

Although somewhat surprised to be asked once more for his tutelage, Dun nodded. "Yes, of course", he replied.

For a few minutes he focussed on the steps of the dance, being somewhat more experienced than Miss Wood and therefore responsible for keeping them on the right track. "When I have to", Dunstan admitted. He'd rather be reading, frankly. "What about you? Do you... enjoy it?"

If there was any higher power, they certainly enjoyed themselves at Sebastian's expense. As if pairing up to waltz under the all-seeing eye of Madam Fussy wasn't enough to slow the clock, Sebastian had been left out of the initial pairing thanks to a staircase that refused to shift back into place. Humiliating.

So he watched his peers dance, if that's what the seasick wobbling was meant to be. It took intensely painful pressure on his tongue to keep from laughing. He may have been late, but it did enjoy the show, at least until Benwick shot him disapproving glares.

When the announcement came to switch, Sebastian almost crawled over a nearby third year to secure a partner. He was not interested in being some cautionary tale on punctuality. Though the girl he cornered certainly would disagree. "Miss Fawley," Bastian cringed as his voice cracked like he was thirteen again. "Miss Fawley, would you do me the honor? Please?" The last he added hastily, hoping on every good thing that the Fawley-Urquart feud didn't need to include him.

(Sneaking this in because ooops, sorry, Bee!)

Ned was about to look around for Alice, since she was the safest option, but it seemed Sloane found him first. His face broke out into a grin at her dramatic 'save me,' and he gave her a nod of agreement.

"Had more than enough of Selwyn?" He questioned with a chuckle, already knowing the answer. When the music started, he was an easy enough dance partner. He wasn't the best, but they would likely be passable together. Throughout, he kept up some small talk. All in all, it felt like he was dancing with his little sister, which suited him just fine.

Sloane Bixby and Edison Moony

Deanna was certain Miss Bixby could have, and should have, chosen a more suitable partner, but her pairing with Mr. Moony was passable. They merely received a nod on her way by.

Cameron Gillenwater received a wince that he had moved on to another. She just hoped she too wouldn't be thrown about like a sack of potatoes.

Dunstan Ruskin and Joella Wood

"Much better, Miss Wood, five points to Slytherin." Perhaps, Mr. Ruskin was a good influence on her. "And five more points to Ravenclaw," she tacked on, convinced Dunstan was really the one making it so Joelle succeeded.

Cadawalader Selwyn and Sisse Thompsett

"Well done, Mr. Selwyn and Miss Thompsett. Five points each," she congratulated, much more pleased with their pairing. Miss Thompsett deserved a chance to shine.

Paxton Fudge

Mr. Fudge seemed to be doing well enough. He received a smile, and she didn't linger to readjust limbs this time around.

Elijah Urquart

"Five points, Mr. Urquart. You are leading Miss Scrimgeour, gracefully."

Rudy Sweeney and Sybille Lukeson

Merlin, poor Miss Lukeson. Mr. Sweeney was bound to squash any girl who happened to be unlucky enough to find herself under his feet. It was a miracle, really, that he hadn't broken anyone's limbs. "Five points, Miss Lukeson," she commented, out of sheer pity.

Sebastian Urquart

The younger Mr. Urquart received a pleasant smile as she moved past him to stand at the front of the room.

Raising her hand, she silenced the music and then projected her voice. "That will conclude our lesson for today. Well done. I have seen vast improvements by many of you. For those of you who still need practice--" She paused, eyeing Mr. Gillenwater and Mr. Sweeney in particular. "I suggest you take time out of your schedules to practice."
