April 6th, 1890 - A Dive Bar in Muggle London
I came a little closer to the truth that day
I heard its call in the alleyway

The tryouts were tomorrow, and so Cash was not trying to be trashed in this bar. Instead, he was just trying to sip a glass of whiskey at the bar and read a muggle mystery book in peace. He was only loosely paying attention to his surroundings; there was almost no one in a muggle bar who could possibly pose a threat to him, so what was the point?

It was only the familiar voice that caught his attention; if he hadn't heard him order a drink, Cash never would have noticed Spryly there at all. He looked up from his book and tilted his head, bookmarking his page with his thumb.

"Spryly," Cash said. Hadn't he been supposed to watch Spryly play? He never had, and he did not know what that meant if anything. They weren't really friends; they were not not friends, either.

This time Spryly wasn't casually yet somewhat intensely stalking Cassius Lestrange when they crossed paths, it was quite by chance. The last time they'd seen one another he'd managed to secure his assistance in preparing for world cup tryouts but then he'd... Well after all of the fuss he hadn't gotten back to him about it and for that he felt rather sheepish, sheepish enough to want to scoot out the door before he was noticed. However, the tryouts were tomorrow and he'd be seeing him then anyway and he'd rather not be feeling more on edge than he would be already.

Might as well face the music now. Anyway he liked Cassius Lestrange, he stood a better chance of making him forget he was an idiot by dealing with it sooner rather than later. Or at least breaking the ice and sweeping the whole thing under the carpet so it never had to be mentioned again.

"You readin' a book?" he asked, sounding slightly incredulous and amused at the same time. Spryly had never read anything for pleasure, reading was difficult and time consuming and a real headache in his opinion.

Cash grinned; Spryly's tone suggested he was poking fun at Cash, but being teased for reading a book was just about the oddest thing he had ever been teased for. "Yes?" Cash said. He folded down the corner of his page.

He gave a light snort of amusement. Reading was the very last thing he'd ever do in a place like this and he didn't reckon many other people read there either. Spryly grinned back at him. "D'you miss the entrance for the library?" For all he knew there actually was a library nearby but he genuinely had no idea and that wasn't the point anyway.

"Reading here isn't that weird," Cash protested, although it was definitely pretty weird. He just liked the background noise, and the promise of solitude that came with it.

His only response to that was to quirk his brows up in a show of disbelief. Spryly took a deep swig of his drink and finally addressed - what felt like to him - the elephant in the room. "So tryouts tomorrow..." He rather wished he hadn't, a rush of dread suddenly pooled in the pit of his stomach. "You ready?"

"I think so," Cash admitted, with a shrug of his shoulders. He wasn't that worried. He would get on the team, or he wouldn't, and maybe it wouldn't change anything either way. "Seeker tryouts are at my pitch, which is good."

"That's lucky, eh? I'm at Puddlemere myself." It would be his first time in a professional stadium in any capacity and he was excited enough just about that. Regardless of whether he made the national team he'd have achieved a personal goal just by showing up. "Can't b'lieve it's happenin' really." That was the understatement of a century. He took a large sip of his drink and wished he'd not broached the subject after all, now he was starting to get nervous about it.

"Oh, Puddlemere's a good stadium," Cash said, although truthfully he would have said that about any stadium. "I'm - excited? I guess? How do you feel?" He had more feelings about it than he did about some other things, in that he was interested.

"Yeah, definitely excited too." It wasn't a lie but the overarching sentiment at the moment was not glee. "Really, really excited." Damn it he'd overdone it. He took another large gulp of his drink. "This tastes great, it's really... er... gin-ey."

If Cash recognized anything, it was nervousness. He quirked his eyebrows up at Spryly.

"You need to breathe," he suggested.

"Me? Breathe? I'm always breathin', I am!" He laughed uncomfortably and forced a grin. Merlin's beard he was going to be slaughtered tomorrow, what was he thinking? "Both nostrils 'n everything!" Oh god he was embarrassing himself, wasn't he?

"You seem a little panicked," Cash said easily; there was no point in dancing around it, because he was frankly a little concerned. He had seen Spryly shy, the last time they talked - but certainly not panicked. This was different.

Spryly hadn't been expecting to be called out like that. He chucked weirdly, "No!" He polished off the rest of his drink, much to his dismay, and placed it back down a little too loudly. "Not me." He'd somehow managed to sort of maybe befriend Cassius Lestrange, fancy pants pro quidditch player, and he was now losing whatever impoverished yet somehow cool enough to associate with persona he'd done that with and replacing it with the sad deluded fool that he was. He was too poor for dreams, when was he going to learn that?

Cash didn't know what to do with this; he eyed Spryly with a small degree of suspicion. "Alright," he sad, because Spryly was pretty adamantly refusing his help.

He couldn't quite figure out what the implications of 'alright' were but he felt like they were negative in some way. Damn it. He was throwing everything away now, what the hell was wrong with him?

So naturally he chose to abruptly leave before he did anything else he'd regret. "I- I should go - big day 'n all. Tomorrow. Good luck." He finished off his drink and got up to leave. "See you soon, maybe." The chances of him getting onto the national team now seemed so minuscule he was starting to wonder whether he might just bail completely.
