Most were crumpled up and burned in the common room fireplace.  The last one is actually sent via school owl.

Ms Montgomery,

Stop writing me.  I don't give a damn that you're supposedly sorry.  You abandoned us to become a strumpet.  You aren't my mother.  You're just a low-life whore who can't even

February 5th, 1890
Mother,

I wish I could forget you.  What you did to Father and me is inexcusable.  I would appreciate it if you ceased writing me at once.  I do not love you.  I highly doubt you could ever be better.

Leave me alone,

Thomas

Mother,

I miss you. Why did you have to abandon us? Weren't we enough for you? Why couldn't you have been happy with us? Did I do something wrong? Am I really that unlovable?

Your son,

Thomas

Dearest Thomas,

I could ask you the very same question you wrote to me, but I hardly mind and after all I would not dream of prying. Beside, wouldn’t it be better for us both to pretend no time has passed at all, and think of other things? Why not now? Now is as good a time as any.

Why don’t you tell me something about school? (I am glad enough to have a letter from you, so you might tell me anything and I would be deliriously happy to hear it.)

I am, always and forever,
your mother

He was too pissed off to write back in a timely manner and let her letter sit at the bottom of his book bag for weeks. After about fifteen versions of his reply, he stopped caring about being neat with it and just sent this violently crossed out version.

Mother,

Pretend no time has passed? Are you daft?

I'm in my fifth year. In case you don't realize how long it really has been. I'm studying to be an animagus. I'm not sure father approves of that decision, but it's mine to make.

What have you been occupying your time with? since it's obviously not been your family.

Thomas

Dearest Thomas,

Do you think I don’t count the days? It still hurts to be away from you after all this time. A fifth year, though! You’ll be as tall as James now, I expect, or taller I imagine you’ve grown!

An animagus? How exciting! I don’t know much about that, but I hear it’s wonderfully difficult to do. Of course it’s your own decision, in the end, you are quite old enough to form your own opinions - and I’m sure you’ll be sensible and careful about it, Thomas, so I can’t see why your father shouldn’t trust you. He was always so I am sure you are a favourite with your teachers, too.

I can’t speak to anything so thrilling as that kind of study, but I live in London now. It is the best place in the country to study the arts, you see, and I have been enhancing my talents in all sorts of disciplines. It is not just that I love it, Thomas, but that it is quite essential to my existence. I don’t suppose you care much for the arts?
Fondly,
your mother

Mother,
I'm not quite convinced that you do count the days. You could have at least visited me. It must not hurt as much as you say.

I am one of the tallest in my year. It's very helpful on the quidditch pitch to possess long limbs in order to prevent the other team from scoring. Not that you care.

Becoming an animagus is very difficult and requires years of studying, but I think I'm up to the task. I am curious as to which animal form I shall take, but nobody truly knows until they're successful.

Is being a harlot considered the arts? I can't say that I know much on the subject of art. What sort of artistic pursuits are you involved in? Aside from the obvious. I've seen a photograph. A girl from school found one in a shop, hidden in a jacket pocket.

What is London like? When father and I have gone, we haven't strayed from Diagon Alley.

Thomas

Darling Thomas,

What, you’re on the quidditch team as well? How busy you must be, to fit in all this extra work and quidditch! I bet you’re so terribly popular! Go Hufflepuff!*

Though you’d best slow down on the growing soon, then - or watch out, you’ll be a giraffe when you transform!

But you would love London!!! There are all sorts of interesting things and people to see, and much more going on than dull old Irvingly. I have friends who are writers and painters and models and philosophers — and in case the arts don’t impress you, I am dear friends with a very talented potioneer, too. And - lest you think I am not most dedicated myself to my own pursuits - I have been considering taking up acting. It is not the sort of thing I could have ever done in Irvingly!

But you must come to visit me in London in the summer. I shall show you all there is beyond Diagon Alley, and as long as you don’t bring your father, we are sure to have a splendid time.

A thousand kisses,
Ester

*this is not a typo she’s just forgotten where he got sorted >.>
**she was, uh, very drunk writing this whole thing

Hufflepuff?

HUFFLEPUFF?

Apparently, it skipped your notice, while you were larking about with that man, but I was sorted into Ravenclaw. Nor am I to become a giraffe. I guess you really haven't missed me if you can't even recall which house I was sorted into. What is it you want then? Money? To embarrass Father even more than you already have?

No, I will not visit you in London, nor anywhere.

Thomas

Thomas,

Darling, darling, it was only a joke! You must have inherited your father’s sense of humour, poor thing. Of course you’re a Ravenclaw, imagine being as clever as you are and being anywhere else.

Please think it over again, my offer of seeing London in the summer! Of course I’m not looking for money or meaning to embarrass you. I have plenty of wealthier friends than the Montgomerys now, in fact, and besides I want for nothing at all -

Except for you to forgive me.

Ever your loving
mother

~sent as a postscript in the middle of the night like two days later when she was in a Mood~
—contd.

Although you might call it a miracle that I am allowed to remember anything about you after you refusing to write a word to me in return for more than four years. What sort of heartless child holds such a grudge? Not a word until now! Some of us haven't your excellent memory, Thomas.

Perhaps if you send me a picture of you I shall forgive you your merciless unkindness to your poor mother.

E.

The following photograph is sent with no commentary except for the word "Here. -T" scribbled angrily on the back. It likely doesn't arrive until the beginning of May. It's a very recent photo, so it's clear he went through the effort of getting it taken during the May 9th Hogsmeade Trip. Maybe he does care?
