DUELING '90: Balthazar Urquart vs Reuben Crouch
#1
January 4th, 1890 — Headquarters of the London Society for the Practice of Combative Magic
Balthazar Urquart
Reuben Crouch

This would be interesting - though the Society secretary personally sympathized with the former poor Minister for Magic, she was determined to remain neutral on this matter. "Mr. Urquart, if you please." she said.

There was, he thought, no need to reinvent the wheel. After the appropriate niceties had been observed, Balt cast a disarming spell at the young Mr. Crouch.

Ben was not particularly thrilled about his luck of the draw on this dueling tournament. A young layabout facing off against an Unspeakable and the former Minister of Magic hardly seemed fair.

He'd been thinking about spells ever since he'd seen the list, and had decided on the best overall defense before they'd even exchanged pleasantries. That way, he could cast it immediately and not try to think of something fitting on the fly. The spell was intended to create a defensive wall in front of Ben, which grew from the floor up — and hopefully did so quickly enough to block the incoming spell.

Well! That was an interesting turn. Perhaps Mr. Urquart was a tad off his game today, the Society secretary thought. The wall had been erected rather quickly and done its purpose. While well casted, Mr. Urquart's spell did not reach its target, and so the secretary announced, "Well casted both of you, however this first round will go to Mr. Crouch." She nodded to the round's winner. "Mr. Crouch, when you are ready, please begin our next round."

Honestly, that felt more like good luck than anything else, but Ben wasn't going to complain. And now came the fun part, where he got to show off some personality and flare — not that anything Ben did was ever lacking in personality or flare.

Ben flashed a smile at the audience, taking a brief moment to savor his victory. Then, because going from the ground up seemed to have worked for him before, he cast a spell intended to encase Mr. Urquart in the center of a quick- sprouting tree.

The former Minister's shield was sucessful and Mr. Crouch's spell fell fruitless. "This round to Mr. Urquart," she announced. "Mr. Urquart if you'd like to commence our tie-breaker."

The wizard offered opponent and moderator both a polite smile before casting a stunning spell at Mr. Crouch.

A bit put out by his defeat, Ben decided to cut the frills this time and cast a shield charm.

At this point in the duel, the society secretary knew the object of neutrality was straight out the proverbial window. She winced as Mr. Urquart's shield failed to hold against Mr. Crouch's spell and quickly revived him after he'd crumpled to the ground. Oh dear. She quickly revived Mr. Urquart before declaring Mr. Crouch the winner.
