Unspeakable Archives

A Department in the Ministry of Magic whose actions were shrouded in secrecy, as those who worked there sought to unravel the mysteries of the world – including research into time, death and love.— Pottermore

The Department of Mysteries is home to abundant knowledge and experimentation, and few know what truly goes on behind its doors. The Archivists, however, know more than most. Trusted with all the knowledge the department has ever amassed, the Archivists work behind the scenes as librarians, custodians, and human repositories. The archives are almost as old as the department itself, having been developed five years in by Warrington Greene, the first archivist.

It is a small team: six hand-picked individuals, led by a Head Archivist who was previously of their ranks. These people are generally:

• Highly intelligent
  
• Lacking in external connections
  
• Possessing a special skill or knowledge that has them ‘flagged’ as a candidate
  
• Those who wish to know more about the world than their existing field can accomodate

Exceptions can, of course, be made for the right candidate.

Their work days are spent in a number of ways, all within a special archival subfloor of the department. This subfloor is accessible only via a lift within the Department of Mysteries itself, and consists of a workroom with desks and a massive card catalogue spanning one wall of the room. From here, there is a corridor that leads to a tearoom, a toilet, a library, and the Hall of Artefacts, a labyrinth of constantly moving small rooms, each dedicated to a specific artefact or experiment. The correct path is available only if one has the relevant card from the catalog, upon the back of which will appear a small map.

Throughout the day, Archivists might…

• Keep meticulous records of departmental knowledge/experiments, each scribed into a book kept in the archival library
  
• Wade through pensieves of memories of Unspeakables, past and present, to learn about their work
  
• Meet with Unspeakables to interview them on current projects, or serve as a “human Google” to direct them to materials, or provide knowledge, to support these projects
  
• Engage in their own research, time permitting. Time often does not permit, but it’s always good to have hobbies!

Worried that all this knowledge might be Too Much? A security risk? Worry not!

• All employees agree to a “Forget-About-It” rune, tattooed behind their left ear. This neatly segments their memories into two halves, which switches when they enter/leave the Department of Mysteries (yes, Severance).
  
• While in the department, they go by an alias—something similar to their name in some way, but not it, so as to add a layer of anonymity.
  
• When asked about their jobs, they say they are “support staff at the Ministry of Magic”, a phrase so boring few people ever want to follow up.

It is a well-oiled machine.

But all machines break down.

The Archivists

"PURDY"

60+ | MCAB/UCAB | OPEN HOUSE | HEAD ARCHIVIST

This character is temporary.
“Purdy” has been the head archivist for 5 years, and boasts a scar where their forget-about-it rune once was as a mark of their station. As such, they are once again one set of memories, which prompts semi-regular headaches for which they take an experimental tonic. Its side effects include an occasional blue tinge—a small price to pay, in their estimation. They are deeply committed to the Department of Mysteries, the archives, and their work, and after examining Win’s file—”Purdy” was in charge of her specific records—set about recruiting her to the archives fresh out of school.

They are a skilled occulmens, and one of their responsibilities is training the archivists in this ability.

Unfortunately, while an excellent archivist, “Purdy” also has amassed substantial debts that must be repaid. With the rejoining of their memories, however, they’ve had an alternative currency that might be used…

"NUTT"

Late 30s - Late 40s | MCAB | SLYTHERCLAW | ARCHIVIST

OUTSIDE | His unusual route to his current position means he is not isolated outside of the Department: in addition to his wife, “Perry”, he has living parents and siblings, at least two of which he is close with. His marriage, however, is strained by their limited success producing children and the fact that they have so little to discuss outside of their domestic life. “Nutt” has also spent much of his life fighting the fact that he is gay—he is reluctant to admit this even to himself.

INSIDE | “Nutt” goes by one syllable of his surname when in the Department of Mysteries. He is one of the very rare archivists who began as an Unspeakable, flagged for his eidetic memory and his frequent visits to the archives to satiate his desire to Learn More. He is charming when he wants to be, but generally no-nonsense…if you don’t count his secret relationship with “Green” as “nonsense”. Particularly knowledgeable in runes, he developed the series of “look away” runes for Win’s arm in the first year after she joined the archives.

"PERRY"

LATE 30s | MCAB | RAVENPUFF | ARCHIVIST

OUTSIDE | “Perry” was raised by a grandparent, who passed shortly after she concluded her time at Hogwarts. Married to “Nutt”, the two have only successfully had one child, a fact for which her husband blames her profession—though they have no evidence it is at all a factor. Their marriage came as something of a shock to the then-Head Archivist, as they met and courted before realizing a version of them knew each other already. Their marriage is, at present, tense; with both working jobs they cannot remember, “Perry” often feels as if her entire world is the house—a claustrophobic world, in her estimation. Each pregnancy necessitated that she leave work for its duration, and privately, she views those weeks/months as the lightest her life has ever been. She requested to leave the job two years ago, but the request has not been echoed from within the archives, so she reports to work each day, dissatisfied with the life that she has found herself in.

INSIDE | “Perry” goes by her maiden name in the Department of Mysteries, though of course, does not know this. She was recruited to the Archival program after excelling as a librarian—but doesn’t remember this, either. She has a surprisingly bubbly personality for their field, and is excessively (in Win’s view) chatty with both the other archivists and the Unspeakables. She has, on multiple occasions, said the phrase, “Don’t look so grim, Miss Grimm!” which has not exactly endeared her to the younger Archivist. In spite of her sunny disposition, she cannot help but be rather snippy with “Nutt”, though cannot say what it is about him that bothers her.

"CRUZ"

30s | WCAB/MCAB | GRYFFINCLAW | ARCHIVIST

OUTSIDE | The lone survivor of a shipwreck in his childhood, Cruz was spotted by no fewer than twenty-seven muggles hovering above the wreck, resulting in a bit of a mess for the Ministry. Other than this, he has long been lucky; things tend to work out for him. He patented no fewer than eight charms with the Ministry—related to knowledge and memory—before being recruited to the archival program. Outside of work, he is friendly and jovial, often a bit in excess to hide the fact that he is, actually, rather lonely. He is currently working on a book of magical theory, but is finding himself more and more blocked as he tries to express his ideas and understanding of the concepts.

INSIDE | Bar, perhaps, the head archivist, there is no one better at understanding the magical theory behind experiments than “Cruz”. Though unaware of his expertise and efforts outside of the archives, he is working on a book of magical theory. He doubts it will ever be published, as it would have to be scrutinized heavily to ensure it isn’t exposing anything it shouldn’t, but he finds the process stimulating.

GREENE

26-33 | MCAB/UCAB | SLYTHERDOR | TRAINEE ARCHIVIST

Warrington Greene was the first archivist in the Department of Mysteries, devising its policies and procedures himself. Since then, there has always been a “Greene” in the archives, not able to retire until his or her eldest child joins their ranks.

OUTSIDE | His mother’s eldest son, the name “Greene” has long since been married out of the line, and so has nothing to do with his actual name. Always a fun-loving lad, he is a bit of a rake when allowed to be, enjoying the company of both men and women. Though supposed to join the Archive on his twenty-first birthday, he fled the country to get out of it, only returning home for his father’s funeral after which he agreed to do the “right” thing. On the bright side, it isn’t terrible living a life where one does not actually remember working.

INSIDE | “Greene” is now two years into the job, and it’s plain he got it for the sake of tradition, not because he had any affinity for it or desire to do it. He is often given menial filing tasks and sent on retrieval errands, which means he knows the archival layout incredibly well—handy, for carrying on with “Nutt”. Archival training officially takes three years, but it’s expected he will take longer at the rate he is going. The only area where he is not struggling is in his occulmens training—he finished this in record time, and was begrudgingly declared “a natural”.

It's been over five years since Felicity was widowed in a tragic carriage accident but she is too young to be alone forever! Enter: you. Someone in a healing profession, but also middle class becuase if Fee marries again I want her to be MC >.> You can have your dark secrets and whatnot, but generally should be someone that won't completely fuck her over (partially can be entertained ;P). PB is hella open, but pictured is Jesse Williams.

Kayte, can I use an existing character for this? Abso-tutely! This is a nice, open want ad, the only three true requirements being MC, healer and/or physician, male and at least 30 y/o. Existing characters should be threadded for compatibility, though!

Adventure Awaits

for Sloane Bixby & Harrison Bixby

I know these might be a hard sell, but there is a LOT of flexibility! These characters are welcome to be temporary, or find some reason to come back to Scotland with Sloane in December. Or we can create other adventures! I'm open! Harry is linked above and should definitely be part of the crew. Won't say no if someone can manufacture a reason for Josiah Hatchitt to join them as well.

Sloane left in May to an expedition to South Africa. The premise is a large multi-sectioned research trip that spans a variety of creatures, marine life, insects, along with herbology, potions, naturalists and anything else that might fit! They experienced a major hurricane mid to late-July that scattered them back from whence they came, but are back now and things have settled into a routine. These characters would likely notice a change in Sloane's demeanor upon their return, but how outspoken they are about it depends on the relationships we establish. I'm very open for conversations to find a foundation between these characters OOC beforehand if that helps! I tried to give some variety, but I'm open to any ethnicities/backgrounds etc. If there's a good hook to tie a character to the Fangworth crime family, I am also open to that!

Any of these character ideas can be mixed and matched, or if you have something else that's not on here, hit me up! I put ACAB because realistically it could be, but would likely be mostly WC/MC.

Carolina Salma Hayak	50s | ACAB | open marital status 6+ rep | marine magizoologist Spicy and unafraid to make a feminine mark on a male-dominated field, Carolina takes charge and runs with it. She's taken Sloane under her wing without smothering her too much and Sloane spent several weeks under her direct report. From the coast of Mexico, she is invested in this current expedition and what happens next is up to you! Her name is pronounced "Care-oh-lee-nah" and she won't let you forget it.
"Halstead" Booboo Stewart	early-mid 20s | ACAB | single 6+ rep | journeyman magizoologist "Halstead" is is done with his apprenticeship and moved into the "journeyman" portion of his career. He hovers in between the apprentices like Sloane and the more experienced magizoologists. He may or may not have picked a specialty, but he's confident about himself regardless. From the States, how/why he wound up in South Africa is open. He and Sloane have clicked over some shared interest (flying or meta?) or life event and she considers him a good friend already. Remember metas require an AtO! Reserved for Arcadia!
"Choi" Han Jisung	mid 20s | ACAB | single 6+ rep | creature healer A jovial creature healer, "Choi" wound up on the expedition almost by accident. Incredibly kind a caring, he wears his heart and his thoughts on his sleeve. He can control his mouth, but not his expression, his face comes with subtitles. Outgoing and easy to talk to, he's a big softy who just cares a whole lot about a lot. Sloane enjoys talking to him and views him as— just what she needs, an older brother figure. Reserved for Kit!
"De Vries" Ruby Stokes	early 20s | ACAB | single 6+ rep | apprentice magizoologist, translator A South African native of Dutch descent, "De Vries" is a local and speaks the regional languages fluently. Female apprentices are few and far between on the current expedition and while it was easier to make female friends in her youth, Sloane has struggled in the last year to maintain these sorts of friendships. How she and "De Vries" get on is open for discussion, pending other group members etc!
"Veluz" Anthony Keyvan	early 20s | ACAB | single 8+ rep | artist A true artist, "Veluz's" interest in creatures is more on the observation side. He likes them well enough, but was invited along because of his incredible talent in drawing animals accurately and with speed. He's happy to help with field journals, diagrams and anything else that lets him be creative. He tagged along with an established magizoologist to help with a book on creatures that the magizoologist wants to publish. An old soul and a bit of a softy, he isn't used to "roughing it" like everyone else is and can sometimes have a hard time keeping up.
