It’s quite unusual for a caster's patronus to be their favourite animal, but very possible that it will take the shape of a creature they’ve never before seen or heard of. — Amy

Charming, Ladies (Misses Spellcraft 1894)

Charms had not, of course, been Lorelei's strongest subject--that honor went to Potions--but she liked to think she was still reasonably skilled at the subject. Enough to not embarrass herself, at the very least.

Not embarrassing herself really meant not attempting something so flashy as to doom herself immediately by stretching the bounds of what she knew she could do. So she settled for a color changing charm, which she directed at her own dress.

Chastity hadn't been allowed to stay at Hogwarts beyond her fourth year, so she had no illusions about her skills. Still, there was nothing wrong with a bit of friendly competition, and she found it more comfortable to participate when all of her fellow competitors were ladies. She'd found a white feather amongst the props provided, and cast a simple floating charm on it.

Philomena was decidedly unimpressed by Mr. Prewett's attempt at flower humor, but she let out a nervous giggle all the same because part of her indeed felt bad for him to some degree.

Taking a breath, she tried to focus, first looking at the table in front of them before down at her own dress. A color-changing charm should be simple enough to start out with, she figured. And so she looked at the hem of her dress, taking a deep breath and waved her wand over her skirts, hoping to change them from a jewel-toned purple, to a deep royal blue.

Idris wasn’t the best at casting spells, but then again she did her best not to rub being magical in her sister’s face, even if she said it didn’t bother her. They both knew it did. Her sister wasn’t here today which was better for Idris, leaving her the chance to be able to showcase her abilities – she wasn’t here to catch a husband, of course, but rather show everyone watching the spectacle that women were just as good at things that men were. Hopefully she’d make it to the second or third round.

Deciding on a chair that was easy to bring over rather than something heavy, Idris bit her lower lip in concentration before she carefully cast Diminuendo, the chair shrinking into what Idris believed a good enough size that it might fit into a dollhouse.

For a moment Sisse considered her options. Did she go the showy route as some of the ladies did? Or did she go more complex yet not quite as detectable? Vinegar to wine? A useful and lady like endeavor, one that would show off her own abilities when it came to having her own household. She could summon water - no, someone had already done that. Complex it was.

Sisse summoned a reticule to her and several books and nonverbally cast a nondetectable extension charm inside the small beaded bag. She glanced up with a charming smile and then began placing the large tomes inside the bag. Hoping the complexity of the skill shown through given that the bag was barely larger than a shoe.

It had been a mere whim that had Lottie signing up for this adventure. Now that she was here she wasn't quite sure why she had decided to do so. She tilted her head slightly in thought, her dark hair threatening to tumble out of it's coiffure as her blue eyes scanned the props.

After a moment of consideration Lottie summoned an inkwell and parchment. She dumped half the contents onto the paper, watching in satisfaction as the ink ran across the parchment. She then charmed the ink to turn into butterflies and lift from the page. A small charm she'd played around with when she was writing. She did so hate ink blobs on her paper, better to lift them from the page or turn them into something pretty.

Damara had laughed in her face when she'd learned Divona would be joining the spellcraft exhibition. She hadn't even told Damona. Divona Dodderidge was not stupid or inept or anything of the sort, but she had left Hogwarts following her O.W.L.s and had, admittedly, been the weaker triplet when it came to spells. She had insisted to her sister that she was answering because she could, but really, it was for a far more embarassing reason.

Entrants were invited to the ball, regardless of their class, and Divona Dodderidge was a closeted romantic.

After (the handsome) Mr. Prewett had finished his remarks, Divona selected a vase from the available props...

...and smashed it on the floor.

"Reparo!" the witch cast, a practical charm that she'd had ample occasion to use over the years since departing from school
It wasn't flashy by any stretch, but Divona knew she could do it well.

Patronuses, colour changes, flowers—all either impractical or too fanciful for Persephone's tastes. Instead, Persy cast Lumos Solem, going for a charm more flashy in a literal sense.

do you know what happened that night?

Hermia had no grand ambitions for this competition; no grand legacy to satisfy. Between the parade of endless social events and the ludicrous matches being made among her peers, Hermia's nerves were on edge. The Flint Institute was her only safe haven, but it was no Hogwarts. She still went home to nagging parents at the end of the night. This exhibition was one of the brief exciting things to happen to Hermia. The pace of her daily life was draining, and her joys were fewer and farther between.

But magic brought joy. It was with that thought that Hermia turned her wand toward her gown, casting Colovaria to change the soft blue to bright, Hufflepuff gold.

Fitz waited as the judges deliberated on matters of execution and ambition, scoring each of the young ladies privately before making their cuts.

Miss Fawley, who had failed to produce a charm in the time allotted, was an understandable dismissal, and with her went Misses Oakby, Bentley, Sprout, Kensington, and Owens, who had produced, but had not been as impactful as their competition. To Miss Sisse Thompsett went a particular note of praise for her performance.

(Fitz, though, had seen the scoresheet, had known Miss Gambol had scored more highly, and was likely not given similar praise as the students in the contest were quite decidedly looked down upon).

"Next," he announced, the losers having been ushered away, "shall be a demonstration of your transfiguration skills. You may begin!"

Your character has 72 hours to post their transfiguration casting, after which the round will be scored. If everyone posts, the lowest six will be eleminated.

Juniper couldn't but grin, having made it through to the next round. Most importantly, she had made it through with Ida, although she didn't dare look at her or congratulate her.

Transfiguration wasn't her strongest suit, but she had Thaddeus had worked on a spell specifically for this competition. Whether or not it would wow the judges or earn good marks was yet to be seen, but June took her wand out and cast avifors on a small object, hoping to transfigure it into a dove.

CiCi was beyond pleased to have made it into the second round, but for a moment, she fumbled about, trying to think of what she could possibly do. Then she thought of it, spotting a box just big enough for what she thought of. "Lapifors!" she cast upon the box, intending it to become an average-sized lop-eared rabbit.

It was rather easy for Mina to think of something; it was another matter, entirely, of finding a target that would be...acceptable. After a moment, she retrieved the vase Miss Dodderidge had smashed and repaired last round, setting it upon a pedestal and incanting, "Duro!" to turn the ceramic to true stone.

Transfiguration. This had always been her best, her favorite subject, five years straight without exception. So she should be able to think of something... scanning quickly across the available props, she spotted the trailing chain of a necklace, which she lifted delicately in one hand. With a deep breath, she whispered "Draconifors," hoping the palm-sized dragons of which she had always been so fond would be equally enchanting to the judges.

Minnie did her best to be gracious and not roll her eyes when Miss Thompsett was given praise for her high scoring; it's not even like Jessamine disliked the girl the way she did some of the others, she just thought her sweet and ever so diplomatic nature screamed fake and it was nauseating. Nevertheless, it was best to focus back on the task at hand and she was proud that she at least made it past the first round; how embarrassing it must be for the ladies who couldn't even do that much! What a pity it was.

The next round was about transfiguration and Jessamine felt quite confident, as this is where her skills shined the brightest; she didn't get to be the president of the club for her good looks (eyes flickering to Miss Flitwick rather accusingly). Minnie only wished she had her animagus form down already, because she was certain that was what Miss Adebayo would be showing off with. Minnie's eyes looked over the props that were laid out for them to use and her eyes finally landed on a bowl and a flower.

Perhaps she could recreate what she did for Professor Foxwood earlier this year! Her heart pounded in her chest as she filled the bowl with a bit of water, then, whispered an incantation on the flower she held in her hand with a flourish of her wand. Should everything go to plan, as she dropped the flower into the water, it would melt for a moment, and then transfigure into a swarm of beautiful butterflies.

Emma's heart raced as she stepped onto the stage for her second performance in the young ladies' charms competition. The first round had gone well, but this time she was attempting something far more complex: transfiguring a pocket watch into a grandfather clock. She had practiced tirelessly, knowing that precision and focus were crucial for such an advanced piece of magic.

She took a deep breath, her fingers gently tracing the intricate engravings on the antique pocket watch she held. The delicate timepiece, a family heirloom, ticked softly in her hand. Emma looked out at the audience, finding comfort in the familiar faces that had supported her throughout her magical journey.

"Here goes nothing," she murmured under her breath, raising her wand with a steady hand. "Tempus Magnificus."
