Algiers to Brest is a very long trip to make in a day and perhaps the Captain of the Santa Antonina cut some corners that he shouldn't have; the cruise ship will wreck in the evening hours of April 8th.

Someone on the crew did manage to send off a distress owl, which will arrive in the very late hours of the 8th. Alfred will ready the Voyager to set sail overnight and will depart early on the 9th. With some ~magical assistance for speed, he will be onsite and performing rescue activities by the afternoon of that same day. Survivors will return to England in batches (see "My loved one is onboard!" below) and — maybe Alfred will get a medal or something? Maybe the Fisks will let him marry Zelda then? Maybe not. Stay tuned.

There are various options available to you depending on how much you want to traumatize your character:

— MAN OVERBOARD: The average seawater temp is 13.6°C / 56.5°F. Without magical assistance, you will begin to lose dexterity after 10-15 minutes in the water; you will lose consciousness after 1-2 hours, and will die of hypothermia after 1-6 hours if you didn't already drown after passing out prior to that. Accordingly, if you want your character to go overboard and survive, you have to be pulled into a lifeboat or use a lot of magic to help you last until Alfred can get down there to rescue you. The Voyager will be onsite about 20 hours after the wreck. On the upside, you don't have to worry about sharks? Assuming you survive, you'll make the first survivor drop off (more on that in the next section).
— LIFEBOATS: Boats can hold about ~20 people, though may have fewer depending on the circumstances when they were launched. They are supposed to be stocked with some provisions, but feel free to adlib whether your lifeboat actually is or how well those provisions actually provide for your occupants. Lifeboat survivors can be found anytime between the 9th and the 16th, depending on how far you drift from the main shipwreck, and can accordingly make survivor drop off one, two, or be brought it after.
— CASTAWAY: With either of the above options, feel free to find yourself on a deserted isle! And by deserted isle, I mean a glorified rock surrounded by sea. You can happen upon this island at any point and may be rescued any time between the 9th and the 16th, depending on how far it is from the wreck and how good you are at signaling your position.
— GOING DOWN WITH THE SHIP: About half the ship will be lodged against the rocks in such a way that it doesn't get underwater, so if you're in that section you can just stay onboard and wait for rescue. If you are in an open/populated area, this will probably happen by midday on the 9th. If you're trapped in a room slowly filling up with water or something, you might not get found until the 10th. Either way, you make the first survivor drop-off.
— SOMETHING ELSE: Want to be picked up by Muggle fishermen? Have your bubble-head charm work so well you sink to the bottom and discover Atlantis? Wrestle a mermaid? Whatever you please. If you want my help determining what is reasonable given our shipwreck parameters, just holler and I'm happy to bandy about ideas

Don't want trauma, but have already established IC that they left with the cruise? Have them miss the boat in any port prior to Brest and they can stay safe and sound in port and return to England at their leisure.

News of the wreck may start as a ~rumor as early as April 9th and will probably be announced more officially on the 10th. The Voyager will have owls onboard but not enough for every survivor to get one to themselves, so letters to friends and family will be bundled and delivered to the Ministry of Magic atrium, where they can then be sorted and distributed. This means you can have threads in the Ministry anxiously waiting for word of your loved ones if you're inclined (or Ministry officials can be frustrated with crowds milling around doing nothing but getting in the way). The first group of survivors will arrive in Portugal on April 10th, when they will have more reliable access to owls, and the Ministry can arrange transport home from there. The second group of survivors will get dropped off in Plymouth on April 12th where they will have access to floo. A few stragglers may be picked up here and there up until April 16th, at which point anyone who hasn't been recovered will be declared lost at sea.

Anyone participating in the rescue effort should be able to leave with minimal notice on the morning of April 9th and be underway until April 16th.

Mediwitches/healers are appreciated, as are Ministry officials who have "rescuing people" vaguely within their skillset (I'm unsure which department this really fits under, but if you can make it make sense, go for it). There might also be space for someone in a more administrative capacity — taking names and statements, investigating what happened to bring the ship down, making a list of who is missing, etc). Total onboard support staff should be pretty small because we want most of the space to be available for survivors, so please lmk if you plan to have your character onboard!

Mediwitches/healers and people to take statements and keep records would also be appreciated in Portugal in the 10th (plus Ministry folks to coordinate transport back home) and in Plymouth on the 12th.

Eldin Bones will be on the ship (with Royal Pyrites & NPC friends?). They should totally get castaway to a glorified rock island. Idk if anyone in the Zabini fam has opinions, but Matilda Zabini is around and available for trauma <3

Pablo Medina is castaway on an island after swimming to it. His survival skills are A+ because of prior experience but long-buried trauma from the last time he was part of a shipwreck is also resurfacing so thats fun.
Royal Pyrites was on the ship and Bree, I'm down for that idea xD

Ambrosia almost certainly kicked somebody in the face as she half-swam half-flew through the water but I am yet to decide whether she's on an island or flew back onto the boat to take advantage of being one of the few left by drinking all the wine and going through her friends' stuff.

MJ made this miracle!

Penelope Fawcett and @'Elsie Beauregard' wound up in a lifeboat that was rescued as of 4/11. Their lifeboat has a somewhat limited supply of provisions but enough that no one would die unless you want them to. Penny's mom fell overboard and was pulled into a lifeboat that was rescued as of 4/15.

  

OH in case this didn't go without saying I am very interested in Alfred threads - during rescues, onboard the Voyager, whatever you want. I'll cameo in other threads or Alfred will put on his grief counselor had and help you unpack your new trauma I'll start stuff if you skype me or ping me here/in my networking, or if you start stuff just tag me and I'll appear <3

Nimiane Delaney managed to get to a lifeboat (and if you want me to bring her back for threads I will happily do so) but she was separated from Caroline. She is among the first to be rescued.

@"Caroline Delaney" is either stranded on a rock somewhere or is in one of the lifeboats, I haven't made up my mind. I would LOVE Caroline threads regarding to escape from the ship. EDIT: Caroline will be with @"Elsie Beauregard" and Penelope Fawcett and will be rescued with them on 4/11

As for my onland folks:

NPC - I'm sure the Delaney family would offer any help that could be of use in the form of Shawn Delaney (and Anthony Delaney) as his wife and little sister are on the ship

Hermione Longbottom is beyond herself with worry and is with Harriet Prewett

Felix Prewett will want to help with the rescue operation and will then write a DP article on it.

Asha Bilton will probably want to help too but end up causing more problems. He will also be taking photos for the DP (if I don't sink his camera). If you want threads that are hilariously misfortunate please let me know - I shall be happy to submit Asha to them.

@"Marie-Louise Skovgaard" is volunteering as a healer in any way she may be needed - either on land or at sea.

Okay, Tanwen Selwyn will find herself left on the boat to be found in the first wave.

Octavia Fawley was also aboard the ship and would have after a brief dip into the water found herself pulled aboard a life boat and would return in the later half of the period.

Anthony Delaney has volunteered as a healer both because he wants to help but also he wishes to find his sister/sister-in-law.

On that note, Delaney Imports can rerouted a handful of ships that were in the area to assist with the search and rescue if needed?

I would love threads for all three and if Tanwen or Tavie could better serve you in a different rescue place/method hit me up!

— Diana Abbott and her husband William Abbott will also be on the ship as a sort of 'baby-moon'. Upon the crash, Diana and Will are separated with Diana getting into a life raft with her sister.

— Benedict Sterling was seeing this as a kill two birds with one stone — he had a work contact in Algiers that he was meeting, and then was going to board the Santa Antonina, disembark in France, and portkey home. Clearly, those plans were kinda shot down.

— Cordelia Fawley 's mother and father will also be on the ship.

HELPERS

Not sure if Aurors are really supposed to be search & rescue, but I can feasibly see the DMLE department at large working in tangent with the hospitals in terms of relief.
