Poppy tossed a pleased smile over her shoulder at Kristoffer as he reassured her she needn’t apologize. The blush on her cheeks was still going strong at the implication of ‘barging into his room’ and the brunette cleared her throat daintily.
(Merlin, she could still imagine the sight of him without a shirt, the sweeping endlessness of him, how badly she’d wanted to reach out and touch—)
“Goodness,” Poppy breathed, more to herself than to her companion. A small hand came up to her cheek. It was hot to the touch, enough that she was sure anyone would be fooled she had a proper fever. Trying to recover, the girl managed a genuine, twinkly little laugh. She didn’t know, but she was happy to accept this truth as if it had been long understood between them.
“You may live to regret that statement one day,” the brunette teased. And… heart wrenchingly, she realized that it might be true. He didn’t know the half of it… Shoving that thought aside, Poppy forced another little laugh. “Come on,” she urged, grabbing Kristoffer by the hand again. “Before everyone else wakes.”
