Inwardly Gus winced as Basil turned toward Ms. Dashwood to ask who she was; as upsetting as it was he wasn’t surprised - she was casting a memory charm that negated negative thoughts, so perhaps the family had a fight recently that his mind had forced him to forget about. Still, it wasn’t good that he was asking who his cousin was, as Basil should have some happy memories of her. Hopefully his reassurance that he’d be fine would be enough for Ms. Dashwood to not blame herself for the predicament that Gus had placed them in - he’d owl her later, as before he could open his mouth to say something again she was already halfway down the hallway.
Instead Gus turned his attention back toward Basil; he worried his bottom lip with his teeth. He wanted to cup his face in his hands and tell him everything was going to be alright but this hallway was pretty well traveled - Gus had learned his lesson and didn’t want to be caught in a situation that he couldn't easily talk his way out of. He finally found his voice as he brushed his hair back from his head again. “It was Ms. Dashwood’s spell but my reflection of it. I… how are you feeling?” Did he remember Gus? Hopefully it wasn’t full amnesia, although that might be better for both of them.
“Let’s go into the classroom, Professor Foxwood. I need to take a look at your head.” Standing, Gus offered his hand for him to take. He could better assess what the damage was without being stuck in the hallway, although he wasn't sure what he could actually do. Hogwarts had eyes and ears everywhere, after all.
