Ben was surprised by that comment from Art, and momentarily looked it before he forced his eyes down to his coffee cup instead. He didn't want to come across as judgemental, since Merlin knew they'd both had more than enough of that from outside sources in the past few months. Ben had always assumed that Art's marriage to Desdemona was fundamentally different than his, though — fundamentally better. This statement seemed to imply otherwise, or at least imply that if it was fundamentally better, it might not always have been. This was a new concept for Ben and he wasn't sure how to mentally adjust to it. He took a sip of his coffee. He thought do you ever regret it? but bit the question back. It wouldn't do any good to ask, because it wasn't as though regret was useful to anyone. Regret didn't change anything about the past and it didn't offer any direction for the future. And maybe he already sort of knew the answer, anyway. He remembered Art once confiding in him that sometimes he thought he ruined Desdemona's life.
"The baby is going to change everything, too," he observed. He wasn't asking, because it seemed a foregone conclusion that it would. Whether the baby changed everything for better or for worse remained to be seen.
