After being surprised by the news that morning in his office, Ben hadn't gotten much done related to his work. It was a good thing that his job was so unimportant, in the grand scheme of things. No one was going to die due a delay in their alcohol sales.
He'd worried about whether or not Melody had seen it, of course, and what she might be thinking, but he was sure (well, mostly sure — fairly sure — a little sure?) that he could defend himself on those counts, if it came up. He was much more worried, honestly, by the implications in the first half of the article — that her illness had stretched to an unnatural length, and she really ought to be in the care of a healer. He didn't know anything about these things, so he'd just been trusting her judgement when she said she was fine and just needed to get through it. He'd been excited to see her able to stomach half a bowl of broth, and had just assumed that somehow her body was working it all out and she was getting enough calories for both her and the baby. But if this wasn't normal, if something was wrong, then he wanted to get her to a healer right away. He didn't want to lose her, or the baby.
He'd forgotten that Nova was coming over until the housekeeper reminded him when he came home, by telling him she'd set out the tea in the garden as he'd asked her to and all he needed to do was heat his own water whenever his sister arrived. Shit, Nova. He probably should wait until after she visited to go and have a heart-to-heart with Melody, since he didn't know exactly where that conversation would lead. This probably wouldn't take long anyway, right? Nova had her own life to worry about — she was probably coming as a perfunctory thing, because it had been a while since they'd seen each other, and she'd be gone after an hour or less.
"Yeah, it's good to see you, too," he said in greeting, hoping it sounded sincere. "The garden should be set up for us already. Just let me grab the kettle from the kitchen and I'll meet you there, alright?"
