Mariana thought he was underestimating his cousin if he thought Tatiana was so easily blindsided by mere confidence, but to be fair to him she didn't think her niece would look twice at a man who wasn't self-assured and in possession of a firm backbone. Macmillan at least had that much going for him or at the very least the outward appearance of it. Confidence in a man was often an easily shattered façade.
