‘Of course’ didn’t sound like ‘of course’, which really said it all. Perhaps it was a blessing Daff was looking out the window for a moment, because he felt his face and his hopes both fall. He contained his own sigh by swallowing, and scratched at the wood of the kitchen chair with his fingernail instead.
It was – fine that she felt this way, he told himself. She had a right to, and no doubt she had reasons, too. Maybe Elias just hadn’t thought about it enough yet, and he would come around to her way of feeling in a few days or weeks too? And maybe she would come around to his excitement too – though she had had the headstart on learning the news – but, Elias worried, now he wouldn’t be able to shake the feeling that somewhere deep down she didn’t want this.
He knew he had gone quiet – and he knew if he didn’t do something, he would retreat into his own head, and then he would only make her feel worse by it. Daff was being honest.
