Now it all made sense, pieces falling into place – her tiredness, the spell of dizziness just here, her strange frustrations with herself through – something new. A visit to Amaryllis not a bad sign at all, but a good thing. All this was supposedly normal, then, and Daffy was fine. Better than fine. He had to pull back slightly for a moment, just enough to glance down towards her waistline – as if there was anything visible to see there – and then he grasped her back more tightly in turn, trying to resist the urge to lift her feet off the floor.
“Well, now we have something proper to celebrate,” Elias exclaimed, because what was a birthday to this news? He was surprised at how senselessly happy he could already be about this: because, for all the thought he had given to marrying Daff, he had never spent a wealth of time imagining their life afterwards. Maybe because he had never taken the idea of getting married for granted, hadn’t been sure he actually would until it had been happening; maybe because her family was so large already, so many new in-laws to add to the list, that he had been more conscious of keeping track of those than imagining their own children. Their child – not such a vague impression of an idea now, now that Daff could blame her exhaustion on the baby.
But he realised he was happy, however little he had prepared for this moment; his smile had widened without his even meaning it to. “As long as – you’re alright?” he added, before he let himself get too carried away. (Alright, in that all her symptoms were normal, and not affecting her unusually badly; alright, in that Daff actually – wanted this too.)
