A muscle had gone in his jaw even as he tried to prevent himself, because he was determined not to worry, but if she was dizzy from standing up then something obviously was wrong, and no amount of assurances from Daffy would stop him worrying now –

He glanced down, waiting there patiently – there was little else he could do, since she had put her arms around him – and the more he looked, the more he thought Daffy didn’t really look ill at all. She was a little unusually pale or drained, he thought, but it looked like she was trying not to smile. His expression had turned bewildered before she added a few words in explanation. A few weighty words that made him blink. “The –” Elias felt his eyes widening, half-convinced he had misheard her, and half-winded in his chest at the prospect, if he let himself think perhaps he hadn’t. “The baby? Is it – are you really...?”
