Elias would have never complained about Daffy sleeping late, not after all the problems she had had with being unable to – and in fact, the novelty of sleeping beside her hadn’t worn off yet, because if he woke in the night seeing her there in the dark was always a comfort, with deep slow breaths coming from her chest. She had seemed tired yesterday, and looked especially serene this morning (under the bird nest of hair on her pillow), so he had tried to pad as quietly out of the room and downstairs as he could.
He glanced at the adjoining door to the workshop briefly – but it was Sunday, so he knew he shouldn’t. Finishing one quick task would spiral into four hours before he knew it, and between his work and Daff’s off at the shop, their time together was still precious. So he had pottered around the kitchen instead, doing odd chores and making tea – and he may have found a hidden tin that smelled suspiciously good in the pantry, and by prying it open had found something he probably wasn’t meant to – but at least that reminded him what the date was. She had mentioned it a time or two already, but from day to day it was all too easy to forget.
So at least when Daff came down in a whirlwind, he wasn’t quite as bemused as he could have been. Still – “It’s a Sunday,” Elias said with an easy shrug, feigning otherwise. “And you looked like you needed it,” he said, giving her a thoughtful look. “Tea?” He was already halfway through his, but there was more in the pot.
