His brow remained slightly worried even as she sought to put him at ease.  Jack couldn’t help but feel there was something else there, just out of reach.  Like she was saying something in a language he didn't speak and even if he could bring himself to press the issue he wouldn't know how. What he did understand was that look with all its possible unspoken messages.  It was so familiar and somehow so her that it alone put him at ease.

"Between your sisters and your parents, there's not much more I could do but… you know if you ever need anything you can call on me - bum hand and all." he flashed a grin, trying to ease them back to their usual comfortable banter.  "Just don't tell your dad about all this," he waved his bandaged hand about.  "I think he'd be disappointed that I didn't know leafy death when I saw it."

Daff passed him a sincere smile; she knew he meant it and she knew she would never take him up on the offer, but she appreciated the thought all the same. Nobody else needed to be burdened with her problems. They were of her own making and he would have to deal with them as best she could. Never mind that she was barely staying afloat, but again, nobody needed to deal with that. "I know." She came out with finally, feeling like she still needed to acknowledge it.

"Oh come now, between Thistle and Calla, somebody is always hurt, this is nothing." She teased right back, glad for the change in pace of the conversation. "To be fair, I'm not sure he would know leafy death when he saw it either, unless it lives underwater." Her father was a brilliant marine herbologist; his knowledge of most normal plants was more limited than he would care to admit. Of course it didn't stop him from putting his two cents in habitually when the conversation came up, but that was Basil. "Your secret is safe with me however," Daff assured him as she finished cleaning up the little mess she'd made.

"Stick to flowers you know from here on out though," She chuckled as she plucked a daisy from a nearby vase (they were everywhere, tucked into any nook and cranny available) and tucked it into the pocket of his jacket fondly.

Jack squared his shoulders, puffing his chest slightly to receive the little flower as if he was receiving some kind of prestigious award.  .  It was probably a uniform violation but he didn't even remotely care.  He was glad to see her smile again and hoped the worry in her mind passed as easily as the shadow of worry passed from her face.

"Yes, ma'am." he declared, as if she were a commanding officer issuing a command.  He probably didn't need to tell her that he 'knew' almost no flowers but at least he would definitely remember the death flower now.  "and thank you." he added with all the sincerity he had in him.
