Dueling '90: Natsuko Mountbatton vs. Porphyria Dempsey
#1
January 5th, 1890 — Headquarters of the London Society for the Practice of Combative Magic

At least this pair were easy on the eye, though the Ministry man who truly believed that all duels between women could be improved by both parties being young and pretty. If they could manage to wear especially tight-fitting corsets then all the better.

"Miss Mountbatton to cast first."

Natsuko took her spot on the dueling floor. She saluted the judge and Miss Dempsey, a strange woman she had little in common with. She had been excellent in school and hoped to do ok here.

She raised her want and cast a spell to knock the lady off her feet

Society prowess had no place here, fortunately. She didn't know the young Miss Mountbatt0n, but she hadn't entered the tournament to forge new friendships anyway; she had entered to get to practise the sort of spellcasting one was not at liberty to perform on people in usual circumstances (brothers and nitwits excepted, of course).

With that in mind, Porphyria tried to meet the oncoming spell by conjuring a formation of daggers to cleave through the air. Though they would disintegrate into silver smoke before they hit her opponent, she rather hoped that would shock Miss Mountbatt0n into being knocked off her feet.

Expectations suitably challenged by the display from one of the women he had no qualms about awarding the first point to the woman not currently on her behind. The daggers had been surprising though, if not accurate enough to distract.

"First points to Miss Mountbatton and Miss Dempsey will begin the next round."

Porphyria hauled herself up off the floor, blowing an awry strand of hair out of her face as she considered how not to lose the duel as quickly as possible. Fewer dramatics this time, then? A little less style? A little more down-to-earth, maybe?

She narrowed her eyes at Miss Mountbatton and attempted to turn the girl's wand into a Flobberworm.

Satisfied with the results Natsuko ready herself as the other took her turn to cast. She steadied herself and attempted to cast a spell summoning a mirror in front of her to deflect the spell back at the other woman.

Miss Mountbatton's spell was far too slow this time and instead the young woman found herself with a rather oversized worm in her hands. He couldn't help it - he snorted with amusement at the turn of events and awarded Miss Dempsey the point.

"Miss Mountbatton," he instructed as he turned her wand back to it's proper form. "If you would begin the deciding round."

Natsuko wrinkled her nose at suddenly finding her cherished wand suddenly a flobberworm. When it was restored she was instructed the cast are n the tie breaker.

She readied herself and attempted the enchant her shoes to make her dance.

That had gone better! Phyri thought brightly, admiring her work and Miss Mountbatton's little nose-wrinkle.

She did not much like the sound of the spell her opponent was casting now, but as hastily as she could, she cast a spell to plunge the room into pitch darkness as an evasion tactic.

If Miss Mountbatton's spell reached the other woman it was impossible to tell as the entire room was plunged into an all-consuming darkness that he temporarily worries only he could see before the shrieking started in the room.

Flicking his wand he had no choice but to declare Miss Dempsey the winner of the round, but not before shooting her a filthy look. He hated show-offs.
