September 7th, 1892 — Potions Lab

'Welcome class! please take your placed behind your desks and cauldrons please!' Meserimus called to the class, he waved his hand causing the fires under each cauldron to light. With a further wave his scroll like writing appeared on the board, a potion name, and the first line of instructions.

'You will follow the instructions as they appear on the board, and I will mark you on how close to the correct product you end up.' he said with a cheery smile at the first years, they were incredibly small, especially in comparison to his own rather prolific height, he was fairly sure his white beard was taller than most of those in attendance.

Wide Eyed Potion and beneath it Step 1 - prepare a potion base using either varient 1 or 2 from your potions text book. appeared below it in a similar cursive hand.

'No need to look so anxious - this is an easy one.' he tried to console the sea of terrified faces.

Meserimus will move through the desks and 'grade' the potion every time you post, and there will be a weighted final score for the final potion. If you post 3 times you 'completed' the potion.
1-5 -potion backfires
6-10 - doesnt work
10-20 - Fine potion
25 + Great potion

Confidently he walked into the classroom and took one of the stations towards the front with a polite " Good day Professor Valenduris".  This year was going to be the beginning of a great academic career at Hogwarts for him.  In fact he had every intention of working for one of those scholarships to prove that he could cut it at Hogwarts and shouldn’t be switched back to muggle schooling next year.

Blinking he looked at the potion being requested and smiled realizing that if he got to keep some it could help him stay awake longer to study even harder.  A fact that made up for there not being a single ingredient that would justify him trying to dissect something for fun.  He always did hope for a nice newt spleen being needed and him just finding a newt.

He said quietly “ Read all the steps first as there is a quick bit in this one “ hoping that his words might help his fellow students.  He paused a few minutes as he heard others shuffling about.  Then he started to gather his ingredients and quickly started on the first step of his potion.

Lincoln read the instructions carefully as they were assigned their task for the day. Getting his potions workstation set up in a way that he liked, Lincoln started on the first step. Making a potion base felt relatively easy but he knew this was only the first step. It would likely get a little more complicated from here.

Ah, potions. Eros did well enough but his best class was most definitely Charms class. His potions tended to be more than passable though even if he wasn't destined to be the worlds next star potioneer. It was only his second year though so he supposed he still had room to improve.

He got to work on completing the first part of his potion. Perhaps he might perform a little better than last year without certain housemates there to distract him (*cough* James Fletcher).

The first few days of class had been a bit... overwhelming so far. She was pretty sure she'd done more reading than she typically did in a month if not longer. And honestly, she was quite ready for the weekend already. But this... this seemed doable. It was only following instructions. Everything was laid out before her and it was only the first week so really it couldn't go too wrong good it? She shared a glance with her bench mate before flipping to the stated page, picking variant 2 on a whim and starting.

Owl grade: i genuinely have not thought that far ahead. she hasn't even told me her favorite class yet. i mean I don't think she'd outright fail fail so at least average? An A?

Arriving in class, Lou had taken a seat at the bench beside Honoria (how cruel, that the friends were in separate houses!) and endeavoured to give the professor her full attention, for all that her nerves were very much atwitter. This would be a practical lesson, with ooze and fire and the potential for embarrassment, and the first year wasn't sure she was quite ready for that.

'No need to look so anxious - this is an easy one.'

The professor's words did little to reassure her. Still, she made her way to the store cupboard with the rest of her class, took the ingredients back to her station, realized she'd forgotten some, gone back, repeated the journey, and was now, in theory at least, ready to begin.

She put the first ingredient in her cauldron.

Honoria was insanely excited about potions, second to charms it felt like the most lady like subject, and she had long imagined herself daintily stirring powerful potions. She had eagerly taken her position near Lou and Odessa, her beautiful quill at the ready to take the notes that would make her the magical wizz that she knew herself to be.

She started work on the potion, absently chewing on her lip, making notes on what the professor was saying and then documenting each step she was taking, so that if this potion ended up being successful she could document her success for her mother -and she wanted every detail to be able to recount.

(Not doing it- because its me)

Meserimus had been diligent in his pacing, and he had adverted a few minor catastrophes as he managed to stopped one especially zealous girl from adding dandelions instead of daisies which might have caused rather a mess. Miss Weasley's potion hadn't quite hit the mark and he had had to talk her through the steps of fixing it.

'Well done Mister Dashwood, an excellent first attempt at this potion, really!' he enthused, 'an examplary showing from a first year'

The instructions on the chalk board stared at Kitty judgementally. She had absolutely no experience with anything having to do with cooking or the sort let alone potions and yet here she was trying to figure it out. She was beginning to understand why Professor Darrow had warned her it might be an adjustment. It wasn't just the lack of a maid it was the practical (and non magical) skills she lacked.

With a shallow and a nervous look Kitty, and not at all reassured by the professor's words, Kitty went to gather her ingredients. Of course she didn't know what most of them were so she followed the lead of the other students.

Back at her cauldron she started on step one, cutting up one of the ingredients very very slowly having never used more than a table knife before, and then adding it to the cauldron eyeing it speculatively as if it would explode from just this one step.

Was there another Mister Dashwood in year one or two? And if so, how had he missed that fact? Link had briefly glanced about before realizing that the professor had been talking about him. His ears turned pink in modesty as he refocused on his potion.

He continued through the next steps of brewing.

Well, his potion seemed to be fine enough so far. Eros continued on with the task.

Honoria bit her lip, rather jealous that Mister Dashwood was singled out for such high praise from the professor. Her brow furrowed and hse redoubled her efforts, although she made sure to Keep Mister Dashwood in her peripheral vision -not that she was copying - perish the thought, but rather she wanted to be able to benchmark her results against his and make sure her potion was keeping pace with his. She made a mental note to suggest to Odessa that Mister Dashwood be inducted into their little club. He might not want to write with one of their fancy quills but Lincoln seemed to be able to more than capable of proving himself to be one of the better students of the class.

There was an angry hissing noise from one of the cauldrons, and it began to issue an acrid green black smoke that smelled like sulfur. 'Oh dear Mister Mohr!' Meserimus gasped, hurrying to the boy's side. Archimedes laughed at the mess and the liquid that was now eating into the wood of the desk. Meserimus held out an arm to keep the student away from the clearly acidic concoction.

'I'm afraid this is rather ruined. You've overheated the base solution, there is no salvaging it, I'm afraid.' He waved his hand and the solution in Mister Mohr's cauldron vanished. 'You may start again.'

Kitty's attention was drawn by a hissing cauldron. Her eyes swung around the classroom to spot what was happening only to see thick smoke billowing from a boy's cauldron. She gulped, suddenly things seemed even more nerve wracking than they had previously been. She turned back to the directions determined to get this right and started on the next step.

Louisa did her best to follow Professor Valenduris' (patient) steps to repair her potion attempt, though the situation did not do wonders for her confidence. As the professor left, Lou did her best on the next steps.

Miss Arundale was proving herself to be rather adept at potions. Meserimus had to admit he was more than a little surprised. Most muggle born students when they came into the school struggeled with potions - the poorer ones did better than the wealthy because they could at least cook, which gave them something of an advantage when it came to managing the cauldron.

Miss Wealey was doing less well - He wasn't sure what had happened but her cauldron had over boiled and it was doubtful that the potion would reach the correct consistancy.
