"Well that seems dreadfully presumptuous of you," Fitz pointed out. "Depriving yourself of a roof over your head, coming to my home to drink all of my liquor. And here I was, wasting my energies feeling sorry for you."

Any attempt to appear serious fell entirely flat.

Arthur rose his glass at Fitz as if he was pointing at him. "I think I only drank half your liquor," he said. (This was still an exaggeration, as Fitz owned a great deal of liquor.) "So you can continue to feel sorry for me and let me be an inconvenient house guest, thank you."

He would have everything figured out soon. He just hadn't managed it yet.

Fitz emptied his glass.

"Stay as long as you like, of course," he affirmed, the as usual rather implied, before adding with a smirk, "though I'd encourage...caution before opening any closed doors. For the sake of Mrs. Prewett's modesty, that is."
