Appearance: Nikolai has never been good-looking nor bad-looking, settling himself in a happy middle ground and allowing his personality to affect his bearing as it may. At five feet and eleven inches, his is a rather lanky form, though broad shoulders and sturdy legs make him look much more the stereotypical man than he did in his somewhat awkward youth. He carries himself with the posture of good breeding and upbringing, though has something of a casualness to his gait, as if his movements are a whim rather than carefully planned. He dresses well but not ostentatiously, and his garb is always immaculately pressed and cleaned. In his pockets, one might often find a pipe, his wand (which he uses with his right hand), a spare quill, or a silver pocket watch.
His eyes are a green similar to those of his sisters, set beneath thin lashes and large, but tidy, eyebrows. Nik's brown hair is nothing to remark upon, and is not allowed to achieve any great length. Vocally, his tenor voice has a very firm grasp on English and its pronunciation (he calls himself fluent, but once in a while some obscure word will crop up and leave him utterly baffled), though his words are always accented, and can become quite incomprehensible to all but his daughters if he becomes particularly excited.
History: Pre-Birth | Muggle Ana went into her marriage well aware of what her new-money husband truly was, but too perilously situated within her family to back out of it. Nonetheless, she grew to love her husband, and he her with the arrival of their son.
1837 | In October, Nikolai is born, the first child to Aleksandr and Ana Sleptov. His birth was a trial, but both mother and son made it through unscathed. His earliest years would be spent in the family manor under the care of several nannies and the watchful eye of his mother.
1850 | Nikolai, now twelve and away at school is informed of the arrival of his sister, Ivana, though he does not get to meet the new addition until he returns home for the Christmas holidays.
1856 | Nikolai completes his initial education. A gifted student in many subject areas, throughout his schooling he showed a particular gift for defence against the dark arts. Nikolai begins his training to become an Auror for the Russian Ministry of Magic in the following autumn.
1860 | As a fully-fledged Auror, one of his first solo assignments is the investigation of a man accused of killing another wizard—he proves not only innocent, but to be the brother of Nikolai's future wife, Svetlana.
1862 | Nikolai and Svetlana marry in March. By the year’s end, he has his first affair, with the wife of one of the senior aurors. This lasts for four months.
1863 | Nikolai's father dies of a heart attack early in December. Nikolai takes quite a bit of time from work in order to see to the needs of his mother and sister, and eventually decides that life as an auror is not the one best-suited to his new role as the head of the family. Nik takes on a teaching job at Koldovstoretz, teaching students Defence Against the Dark Arts, in January when the new term begins.
1866 | Svetlana finally gives Nik his first child in February, a daughter called Eva.
1869 | Petra is born in June.
1875 | Nikolai's bad (read: horny) habits catch up to him in April as one of his students confronts him, informing him that she is with child and that he is the father. Aghast, as one might expect, he promptly begins avoiding her, and eagerly anticipating the end of term. He is relieved two months later when the girl is “sent to an aunt for finishing” by her parents; he does not see her again for many years, but changes his attitude towards his... relationship with his students.
1876 | Early in the year, news reaches the headmaster of Nik’s indiscretions, and Nikolai is informed that his services are no longer required at the school. It is only because of the man’s friendship with Nik’s late father that he leaves with a good reference. He lies to Svetlana about his dismissal, stating that he felt he needed more time for his family.
1877 | Missing his role as a professor, Nik is both surprised and thrilled when he is offered a position at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He, his wife, and his children move from Russia to the village of Hogsmeade, a drastic change for the whole family. He begins teaching that September, and Eva begins attending school there in Slytherin house.
1878 | After two months with an illness, Svetlana finally passes away in March. Nikolai removes himself from the school for the rest of the academic year to mourn and spend time with his children.
1880 | Petra begins her schooling, and is sorted into Ravenclaw.
1881 | After something of an ordeal with her husband, Ivana relocates to Hogsmeade, pleading (the first time he has ever seen her do so) with her brother to be allowed to stay with him. He agrees quickly, troubled by the state she is in, and the two gradually get to know one another.
1883 | Ivana returns to her husband and Nikolai summers in Russia where he meets Ustinya Volyainichna shortly after her debut. The pair court very briefly, and marry before returning to Hogmseade in August. His homecoming is shocking to his daughters, putting a strain on their relationship.
1884 | Ustinya gives Nikolai his first son, called Ivan for his aunt, but the child is stillborn. This serves as a swift nail in the coffin of their relationship. During the new school year, he makes the acquaintance of the new Ravenclaw matron, Mrs. Rosaline Bennett. He thinks little enough of her at first until he learns she can speak Russian.
1885 | Ivana writes to inform Nik of her husband’s passing. After reporting to Russia for the funeral, he leaves with the sneaking suspicion that she has done away with him herself. Under the influence of love potion, Nik and Rosaline kiss during the summer. During the Christmas holidays, they take things several steps further after her house burns down and she spends the holidays with the Sleptovs.
1886 | Nik reluctantly agrees to let Lord Twatface court Eva. Petra loses an eye in a duel at the hands of the careless, vile Emerald Weasley.
1887 | Eva catches her father and his mistress in flagrante, which is awkward to say the least. Petra debuts at the Hogwarts coming out ball, giving Nikolai—temporarily—a full house for the season. Year’s end sees Eva become Mrs. Humphrey-Mavis.
Personality:
As a professor, Nikolai has a relaxed demeanour and a good sense of humour—so long as his students show him respect. With a tendency towards unorthodox teaching methods, the wizard ensures his classes are seldom boring. He is not, however, comfortable alone with his female students; while he does have a good measure of self-control, he still frets that what happened in Russia might happen in Britain.
As a father, Nik has always been doting. He adores both of his girls to the point where he often cannot say no—a fact he blames for any poor behaviour they show. He will never betroth them for he does not want to risk their unhappiness, though after meeting Eva’s intended, he did seriously consider re-evaluating this point of view. It is very rare that his children will spark his temper, and he always regrets his rage after the fact.
As a husband, he is less diligent. While he would not marry a woman without loving her, he would bed a woman without loving her—and often with his wife waiting at home. He feels he has matured since relocating to Hogsmeade, but still tends to be reckless in his sexual interludes, most notably entering into an affair with a colleague.
