HOM Summer Homework
#1
Sent home with students concluding years 1-4.

History is all around us. Your job during these summer months will be to engage with it. Perhaps you tour the pyramids of Egypt, or pay a visit to one of our museums closer to home. Maybe, instead, you witness history in action—something that will change our world forever. Whatever it is, you are to write an essay about it to be placed in my hands on the first day of classes. Happy summer!

History of Magic Homework

Hogsmeade has a history tragedies since the migration to the village, which is ironic given that it was presented as a haven for wizards after the 1877 muggle riots. Every event has left its marks, and the magic-inhibiting fog is unlikely to be the exception; we're already seeing the blame pinned on already-ostracized members of our community, such as werewolves and vampires who are probably not the culprits.

I write this as I recover from the High Street troll attack that took place on June 20th. While my leg will most assuredly recover, I am unsure whether the magical community will recover from the fear-mongering taking place. We are never certain how the present will change the course of history, but I have an nagging feeling that this fog will change the way the Ministry functions—especially in regards to how it functions in times of tragedy.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING

Though London is always abustle with activity, it is without uncertainty that history is to happen again at the village of Hogsmeade.

It could be said that history is not be something you seek out but something all-around: tabloids, gossip, and idle chatter all contribute to how events will transpire and with History of Magic, there is no better example than the fog that has been terrorising Hogsmeade.

All around people are looking to Muggle techniques to daily life, despite my being in London. People are worried the fog will reach them.

Attached are clippings which show just how normal the fog has become. It's a way of life for the residents of Hogsmeade and Irvingly.

What will happen once the fog clears? I hope to have an answer when this is handed in though a prediction from myself is more acceptance of Muggle ways and less reliance on magic.

History of Magic Homework

It is hard not to see this summer as history in the making given the attention given to past tragedies that have affected the magical community. While this summer has brought less death than the laughing plague, fires, Ministry explosion, and the Wizarding World Market disaster of last summer, it has exposed our vulnerabilities.

While seeing the future is a talent reserved to the most famed of seers, it is not difficult to see the impact this summer might have on the future of our world: creation of barriers to ensure densely-populated villages such as Hogsmeade remain safe from attacks, rampant xenophobia as dozens place the blame on the carnies, and perhaps mass migration out of Hogsmeade!

Hogsmeade was settled around 1000 A.D. however, it was not until 1877 that it was largely settled with magical families afraid of the muggle riots. Since then many historical events have happened. Such as the founding of Irvingly and the Laughing Plague. However, this summer became part of history too.

On June 4th Irvingly reported the fog for the first time. As the fog spread there were more concerns and articles about it as it blocked magic. Large groups of concerned citizens who were able to leave evacuated to other locations, such as Sanditon Resort. Families were separated by being stranded at the wrong place and time and unable to return home. While few died it impacted society enough that there was talk of alternative schooling for students and even permanently evacuating the town. Because of this the fog will become part of our history.

I spent the summer in London and so had ample opportunity to visit the Museum of Magical Miscellany. I saw many exhibits but the one that interested me most was the exhibit pertaining to the muggle attacks that occurred many years back. These attacks were what caused everyone to move to Hogsmeade and the incidents became pertinent once more when the magical world reconciled with the Queen. History sometimes repeats itself and time will only tell if that will be the case once more.
