distinguishing features: he is a half vampire and so he bears a lot of the same sort of traits as his father, just to a slightly lesser extent. he is rather pale, gaunt, and will burn quite easily in the sun if he stays out in it too long or doesn’t cover up with a hat, umbrella, or stand safely in the shade. his canine teeth are longer than the average full human’s canine teeth and they have the ability to pierce skin with ease if he wanted to; he enjoys the taste of blood and his heightened senses make him sensitive to it, but he doesn’t need it to survive and therefore doesn’t consume more than maybe a bloodpop or two. he also has a few little scars on his fingertips from getting pinched while learning how to use the mechanics to build clocks in his family’s shop.

demeanor: despite living a somewhat tough existence, being discriminated against from the moment he was born due to being half vampire, elijah always seemed to be a well adjusted young man who easily emulates his parent’s love for family and general openness. since working with his father and uncle in the shop, he has mimicked more of their mannerisms, especially when it comes to how to handle oneself professionally, especially in front of those in the upper echelon of society, and it has taught him a good sense of hard work and responsibility. many might see elijah and mistake his aloofness and relaxed demeanor as him being lazy or like he doesn’t care, especially as he never did that well in school, but in fact he just fixates on specific things and the rest sort of falls to the wayside; get him in a conversation on something he’s passionate about and he can go on for hours. he tends to react to discrimination by bottling things up and it makes him angry, but he’s more likely to find a nice spot in a forest to shoot spells at a tree than actually fight someone as he doesn’t want to give people more of a reason to think less of him.

fashion: elijah takes great pride in how he looks, though he would never consider himself vain; he knows that how one presents themself is important to how they are treated and so he always makes sure his hair is combed neatly, there aren’t stains on his waistcoats, and that he dresses for the occasion in an appropriate manner. sometimes he uses beauty charms to make himself look a little less pale and gaunt, as he knows it puts some people off and he also adapted his father’s habit of using peppermint to cover up any scent of blood, which usually comes from the bloodpops he snacks on. he dresses as well as he can for what his family can afford, but also dresses for comfort in the way he tends to make sure a lot of skin is covered if he goes outside on a sunny day as the sun can irritate his sensitive skin if he isn’t careful. he prefers dark colors to contrast against his pale skin.

1877 - 1888
the magical world was right in the middle of pure chaos when elijah was born; muggles had found out about the wizards living among them and there were riots, chasing families from their homes and there was no doubt it was even harder for families like his that consisted of not just witches, but beings as well. but, elijah was that little ray of hope that shone through that awful year and along with his older sister, was something to hold onto as his parents shut down the muggle side of the shop. he was a bit fussy as a baby, but it really wasn’t until he reached toddlerhood did he become a bit of a handful; he wasn’t a bad kid in the least, and he obeyed when it counted, he just had a lot of excess energy and would run around and bother his parents and uncle victor at all hours, even when they were busy. he also had a tendency to bite everything he could and latch onto arms if he wasn’t shooed away, especially as his particularly sharp canines were growing in; he seemed to teeth far longer than the average baby, but with some discipline he at least learned to stick to the toys his parents gave him rather than his father’s arm.

when it came to his relationship with his siblings, it was a pretty typical situation for a boy of his age. he loved and cared for his sister, even admired her to a degree because even as young as she was, he thought she was the smartest lady he knew, besides his mother, of course, but he also thought she was gross because she was a girl and he didn’t care for girls. he was protective of josiah and loved to try to carry or drag him around to show him cool things that he found and teach him new things like a good big brother should. elijah got even more protective of not just josiah, but his whole family, when one day while in diagon alley he was with his siblings and parents and heard people saying cruel things to them due to their blood, and it caused a rather explosive burst of magic that could’ve gotten someone hurt if they hadn’t moved when they did. while his parents said they weren’t angry with him, he began to wonder if he had to bottle it up, not wanting to give anyone any more reason to hate him.

of course, elijah loved his sister, but he was rather happy when she went away to hogwarts because it meant his parents would have more time for him rather than having to share it between three siblings. he was happy to get her letters, though, and sometimes he would help his mother shop for treats to send her, and he was always interested to learn about the adventures she may have had at school. when summer came, she brought along a girl, a miss eliza mitchell, who would end up staying with them as a ward and becoming their live-in-maid. he wasn’t sure how he felt about her at first, but she was nice enough and eventually he’d grow to think of her like another sister and become just as protective of her as he was of gabrielle and josiah.

admittedly he was still quite young, but elijah was old enough to understand what the new halfbreed laws meant and it angered and upset him; his parents loved each other, he could see that as well as anyone, and he couldn’t see why they couldn’t be seen as real man and wife. then, he and his siblings were seen as illegitimate and he would not be able to attend his first year at hogwarts in 1888, or gabrielle attend her third year and beyond if this ban stayed in place. there was so much stress, anger, and grief in the house that it was palpable and elijah now bottled everything and stayed silent in his bedroom as he heard his parents discuss things, his father not willing to speak out against the ban as he wished to protect them, but his uncle victor seemed to remind them this is exactly why they shouldn’t have had them; and honestly? elijah was wondering if he was right.



hogwarts school of witchcraft + wizardry
1888 - 1893
thankfully, by the end of the year the halfbreed ban was partially overturned and once again they would be allowed to attend hogwarts, just in time for elijah to start his first year. he was still upset that it happened in the first place, and he knew it didn’t fix things completely as his parents were not married by law anymore and that wasn’t overturned, but he tried his best to still think positively and try to enjoy his first school year. the sorting hat took a long while to put him into a house and quite frankly, elijah was terrified that the hat was protesting against sorting a halfbreed before it decided on gryffindor, leaving him to awkwardly walk off to a sea of red and gold. some of his classmates were welcoming, but others were downright cruel to him and even acted like he was going to attack them out of nowhere! no matter, he found a few friends and tried to stick with them and he still had his older sister to talk to if he needed it; he also found subjects he liked: flying, defense against the dark arts, astronomy, and transfiguration. he wasn’t basically a genius like gabrielle, or at least that’s how he’d describe her if he was asked, but he thought he did okay in school; not the greatest, but at least he didn’t fail his first year and he was proud of that.

when he got to his third year, he didn’t know what sort of electives he wanted to take as he had determined by now that school really wasn’t his thing and it wasn’t like he was going to be as good at everything or perfect as his elder sister who got great grades in everything. he ended up picking muggle studies and ghoul studies because as a halfbreed, he could relate to things that weren’t entirely human or accepted by society. and because his parents seemed insistent on him trying harder in school, when he signed up to be in astronomy club and dueling again this year, he tacked on transfiguration club because he liked the class well enough and perhaps with some help he could be better at it. elijah was frustrated, however, as it wasn’t that he wasn’t trying! he just wasn’t perfect like gabrielle and school was hard for him; plus, when it came to subjects he wasn’t interested in like potions, he just couldn’t concentrate. he felt like he studied twice as hard as everyone did just to pull an a or maybe an e.

as if he wasn’t jealous enough of one sibling, elijah felt that green monster of envy in his heart when it was time for josiah to be in school as he was an instant quidditch star and seemed to get a lot of positive attention from his peers. elijah wished he was good at something, anything, but he wasn’t smart enough to compete with gabrielle nor athletic enough to compete with josiah and now his father was now threatening him if he didn’t get his shit together and pull his grades up, he was going to get pulled out of school because the scholarship wouldn’t cover him anymore. it was frustrating because he loved his siblings fiercely and didn’t hate them or anything, but seeing them made him feel bad about what little he managed to accomplish in comparison.

when he got back to school, elijah sought out a tutor to help him with the classes he at least had a chance in, and that’s when he met miss jessamine parkinson. she was in the year above him, and he’d known her well enough because they’d shared classes and he thought she was beautiful, but she was upper class and looked at him like he was something stuck at the bottom of her shoe, so normally he’d avoid her completely; but, for some reason she was willing to tutor him in transfiguration among other classes, probably to earn favor with the professors, and so he dealt with it. and as harsh as she was as a tutor, she actually did help him pull his grades up somewhat and elijah was sure that he may even make it to his fifth year without failing out. though, watching her scribble things down, admiring how glossy her hair was and how nice she smelled distracted him an awful lot until she snapped at him and reminded him to keep his focus. after passing his classes that year he would present her with a bracelet that he made out of spare clock making materials during the winter holiday, as a thank you for helping him not fail out of hogwarts; she didn’t seem too pleased with it at the time, but he was elated when he saw her in the paper standing by her newly married brother and his wife that summer wearing the bracelet as if it was the same value of her diamond necklace.

come his fifth year, he felt a bit bolder, especially knowing it was probably his last year at hogwarts unless a miracle happened, and he began to write secret admirer letters and poems to her and tried harder to impress her when they studied together; deep down, elijah knew he had zero chance with her, but he was also a teenage boy who was pretty sure he was in love. despite making a fool of himself every time he spoke to her, she still was willing to tutor him and even seemed to warm up to him slightly; at least she stopped mumbling about him being an idiot every time he got an answer wrong and acknowledged his existence when he passed by her in the halls on the way to class. going back home for the winter holiday felt good as he was finally able to present his parents with exam scores that didn’t make him seem like a failure; he would never be as good at school as gabrielle, but he still felt proud of himself. but nothing lit his face up more than when he received a christmas gift from miss parkinson; the note it came with was generic, just a ‘happy christmas - j’ but it was enough to make him wonder if she enjoyed his efforts to impress her and it gave him the confidence to redouble his efforts when he returned back to school.

at the end of the year, despite feeling fairly good about his scores on his o.w.l. exams, elijah knew that they weren’t going to be good enough to earn him a scholarship to do his n.e.w.t. exams, and he had made his peace with that. still, when he got the chance, he thanked miss parkinson for her help and wished her luck with her classes; she was brilliant, like his sister, he was sure she would be able to do whatever she wanted when she graduated. what he didn’t expect was for her to kiss his cheek and tell him to write to her before leaving him alone in that empty corridor, too stunned to do anything but watch as she left. upon returning home and getting his results, it was confirmed that he failed two of his classes and would not be returning to hogwarts in september; his sister, however, graduated with excellent n.e.w.t. scores, and would go on to find a great career.



hanrahans clocks + repair
1893 - present
that summer elijah began to apprentice at hanrahan’s clocks and repair alongside his father and uncle victor since he wasn’t going to be returning to hogwarts in september. at first, he wasn’t sure if he liked it as it seemed so complex and not being good enough to go to school still stung quite a bit, but he quickly discovered this was finally something that he was good at naturally, just like gabrielle when it came to academics or josiah when it came to quidditch; it was still hard work and there was much for to learn before he would be as good as the others, but he had an eye for detail and steady, careful hands that made it easier. plus, he enjoyed just spending all that extra time with his family and getting a chance to bond with them and learn things from them that he probably wouldn’t have learned while he was away at school. he began to mimic his father and uncle’s mannerisms more, especially when it came to how to handle oneself in a professional environment and he learned a lot about responsibility. there were even some times when he was allowed to work on projects on his own, though they, of course, had to be thoroughly inspected first before they were allowed to be sold, but it gave him a strong sense of pride that he was able to do something like this on his own and elijah knew that this is what he wanted to continue to do into his adulthood so long as he was allowed to.

besides working hard at the shop, he did write to jessamine, quite often, and little by little she opened up to him about how she didn’t like being home for the holidays, how she didn’t like when miss garlick went away on vacation and left her, that she was frustrated with her elder siblings. he would tell her things too, and offer sympathy when he could, and in one particularly bold move in july, he invited her to come to the shop for a tour of the workstation. he didn’t actually expect her to come, especially without a chaperone in sight, but she did, and he’d find out later she’d take any excuse to get out of that awful home of hers, and he showed her all of the cool things that he and his family were working on making and repairing. it was then together they discovered a niffler rifling through the decorative pieces and after a rather entertaining round of chasing the creature around the shop, elijah decided to adopt him, and jessamine named him sapphire. it was that day they shared their first real kiss, just moments before his father walked into the workshop and elijah quickly made something up about her checking on an order and jessamine’s sister also showed up, clearly she was supposed to be watching her when she dipped, hoping nobody would suspect anything. they parted, but it was perhaps the beginning of a rather scandalous, secret relationship between the two.

the two would see each other a few more times during the summer, always in secret, but mostly they just wrote letters upon letters to one another. elijah didn’t tell anyone about it, since he knew it would ruin her reputation if he did, but it was rather obvious just talking to him that he was giddy about something other than just being good at making clocks. when september came, he wasn’t so bothered about not going back with his little brother, but he didn’t expect any more letters from jessamine as she would be busy with n.e.w.t. level lessons. that is, until he received a letter ranting about the chaos that happened with the first years, and he couldn’t help but laugh, glad that she would keep him updated on the latest gossip at hogwarts, at the least.

elijah was incredibly interested in the ongoing political discussions that were also happening in 1893 due to the ministerial election; he was incredibly frustrated that he wasn’t old enough to vote because he didn’t think it was fair that his father and uncle couldn’t just because they were vampires as if they were unimportant in the community and honestly? he also believed it was unfair that his sister and mother couldn’t vote either because they were women. if he learned anything, the ladies in his life were at least a billion times smarter than he ever was and therefore more qualified to vote. he was always happy to accompany his sister and mother to campaign events and he wanted to speak up against the halfbreed discrimination policies a lot more.
