May 15, 1893 - Hogwarts Spare Classroom at the the second study night

The matrons have set up a row of telescopes looking through the windows at the back of the classroom tonight. A nice touch given the subjects highlighted this evening. All seems calm until you hear the patter of little china feet on stone floors. You glance up to see your teacup hopping up and joining a throng of teacups suddenly enchanted to have legs rushing toward the telescopes. A group has settled on some star charts nearby and are jumping, sloshing tea from their edges. Apparently every teacup in the room has suddently grown legs!

Millie stared down at her revision notes, trying to make sense of what she'd written in last week's Astronomy class. Sleep was pulling at her eyes, like it had then, and she brought up a hand to smother a yawn. Bleary eyes peered through the gaps in the paper, as if her words might appear there after the fact.

When Vega crosses the prime meridian

Then what?! The young witch wanted to shake herself for not finishing her notes. Suppose this were the vital answer to a question in exams tomorrow. Or she would need it in a moment of crisis someday. What did Vega crossing the prime meridian have to do with anything? Reaching out for her cup of tea, Millie's hand grasped air. Her lips pulled down, drawn against fatigue and frustration, and she ran a thumb over the silver chain at her throat.

Glancing to the side, she spied other students studying just fine to her eyes. She watched the form of Sisse Thompsett form in front of her, seeming far more diligent than Millie had been for her notes in last week's class. Her cousin's friend was a few years older, with excellent taste in books, and she knew how to use the word superfluous in a complete sentence. Which was probably why Millie sat behind her fellow Book Club member, here at the last row near the table of treats the matrons had laid out. If anyone needed more of something, either one of them could get up to fetch it.

The young witch pulled back her papers to check the book again, knowing it would tell her the same things it had before. Vega was part of the Constellation Lyra, it was once the north pole star long before Polaris, it had sacred meaning to the ancient Egyptian warlocks, and its color was the dark, brown hue of spilled tea.

Millie jerked up, spying her missing teacup prancing around on top of her desk. Her mouth hung open at the pair of legs underneath, propelling the cup through its routine. Tea was sloshing all around, and the young witch scrambled into motion to save her parchment and books from more harm. "Stop that!" she hissed at the teacup, which responded with even more dancing. "Where did you get legs?! Sit down."

Her low voice was hardly needed, clatter and noise rose around the young witch as every other teacup in the room had sprouted the same pair of legs and love of dance. "Oh no," Millie reached past her books and papers, clutched tightly in the other arm, trying to catch her teacup. It only danced away, painting her desk with the dregs of her tea.

"Sisseeee?"

Charms was not a subject that overly concerned Sisse, but it didn't mean she wasn't going to study. Her eyes scanned down the list of advanced charms they had worked on this year, nodding to herself as she mentally reviewed them. Next then was nonverbal spells. She particularly enjoyed nonverbal spells, it felt less like flourshing when she cast them, more subtle, effective, less showy.

Her lips were moving quietly repeating incantations in her mind when someone said her name. The noise in the room had increased she realized with a startle, but she turned to look back at Miss Potts. Millie's eyes were wide as she held her arms full of study materials and her tea cup danced on china legs.

Ignoring the noise, Sisse could be rather good at blocking sounds out when she studied or there was an issue, she grabbed her wand and stunned the little china cup. Only to have the stun spell break the teacup in half. Tea spilled down in a puddle under it and the two halves of the teacup hopped on one leg apiece in opposite directions. "What happened?" Sisse asked as all this was happening. As far as she was aware Millie had been studying astronomy not charms. Besides, she had only just encountered enchanting teacups this winter, where would Millie have learned this spell.

Meanwhile a parade of dancing teacups had jumped off the refreshments table and were sashaying over Sisse's bag, mere centimeters from her toes. A small shift of her weight sent her toe into one of the line, the sound of shattering porceline not the only sound of that nature in the large room.

"Oh!" The small gasp came from beneath the young witch's nose, that twitched at the sight of the dismembered teacup. It was just a teacup, easily repaired at the wave of a wand, yet somehow its broken form bloomed a knot of concern in her throat. A furrowed brow looked to Sisse, trying to find a way to explain the occurrence to the older student. "I don't know, they just grew legs and started dancing!"

What planetary phase could cause spontaneous teacup legs, after all?

The third year blinked for a moment, caught by the silliness of her own rigid thinking. This was surely just a charm. If Millie hadn't been so caught up in studying for astronomy she would have noticed that. Taking the cue from Sissie, she pulled out her wand and tapped it lightly against the rim of her misbehaving cup. "Finite Incantatem."

Nothing happened. The young witch frowned at the cup, trying the counter-spell again. "It's not working, Sisse." Millie tried to keep her voice calm, it was just a dancing teacup. It was absurd, really. A dancing teacup. Somehow it bothered Millie too much to enjoy the absurdity of it all. Setting down her wand, the young witch reached for the teacup again. "Waitaminute, I've got an idea. Hold still..."

She wasn't about to try the stunning spell like Sisse did, Millie couldn't bear to see another cup shattered. She was fully set on capturing the cup to keep it from spilling its contents some more. Her other hand joined the first, letting her books rest dangerously close to the spill zone on her lap, while the young witch used her arms to trap the teacup between impassable barriers.

Aha!

It tried to jump over her arm at the same instant Millie reached over with her other, grabbing the cup's departing rim. Tea sloshed over its sides, scalding her fingers and making her hiss in surprised discomfort, but the young witch held on. Its little legs flailed as she brought the cup to her mouth and took a sip. "There," Millie said proudly to the other witch, "We'll just have to drink it all gone."

The hot liquid cascaded down her throat, making Millie grimace as she swallowed. She didn't look over to the rest of the students and their teacups, she could only withstand so much at once.

Something warm was seeping in her shoes, Sisse realized, distracting her from Millie's plight behind her. Sisse looked down to see a shattered teacup by her feet, and a line of dancing teacups sloshing their contents all over the stone floor and indeed her shoes. That was not good. She glanced behind her to see what Millie's idea was, watching as the girl captured and brought the teacup to her lips.

"Wait-" Sisse started but it was too late Millie had already drunk the tea and the grimace indicated it was as hot as Sisse thought it might be. "Here." Sisse quickly cast a cooling spell on Millie's cup. If they couldn't stop the teacups at least she could make it so no one else got scalded. "Do you know a cooling charm?" She asked Millie. Perhaps the two of them could start with cooling the tea and then they'd figure out the teacups from there.

"Oh yes!" Millie sputtered in surprise for a moment, nearly having forgotten the charm for cooling things off. That was a poor thing to forget on the night of studying for Charms as well. The young witch set the cup down on her desk, the tea low enough now that she could place a firm hand over its top to keep its scrambling legs from finding perch. She tried again with her wand, "Glacius."

It was a good thing the young witch found Charms coming easily to her. The teacup neither shattered nor resisted her freezing spell. It did, however, freeze completely solid. Millie snatched her hand away before the ice reached her palm and fingers, warming it back up with her hot breath fueled by tea. "So that worked a little too well."

She found herself giggling at the extremes. What an absurdity, to cool the teacup so much it froze fast right to her desk. At the very least, it gained her the confidence to put her books back on the desk, assured now that they wouldn't be spilled upon. Then Millie directed her eyes to the other, misbehaving cups around the room.

Finding the nearest one, Millie gave her wand another flick, trying to keep her spell lighter and more delicate this time. Its dancing feet slowed enough for her to pick it up and sip calmly at the tepid liquid with ease. Idly, she counted, "Just a dozen more to go...unless you know how to counteract the spell without breaking them again."

"Gentler motions." Sisse coached in a kind voice as shewatched Millie's cup freeze solid. Despite the mistake it was actually helpful for it was one less cup dancing around.

Millie had already moved on to the next one. Sisse started on the line of cups near her and cast the spell. "Let's not worry about drinking them now." She suggested. "Actually.... perhaps an immbolius charm?" She tried it and a teacup shattered. If she were the type to curse this would be the time for it. "Can you ice another over? That seemed to work the best."

Millie's giggles faded out, though not before a renewed sense of amusement at Sisse's repeated attempts to still the teacups. It seemed that her overeager charmwork had really been the better approach after all. Whoever had given their charmed teacups their legs had certainly made the spell quite brittle, and Millie felt a brief pang of regret for the broken china once her amusement faded.

She waved her wand over another teacup nearby, gentler this time, and froze it nearly solid. The cup's little legs, sluggish and wobbling, prompted it to sit its big, tea-filled head back on the desk. A short grin of satisfaction grew on the young witch's face, offering calming words to the chilly teacup, "Just take it easy now, alright? We'll have you back to normal in no time."

What kind of teacup would want to bother with the nonsense of legs, after all?

Millie supposed it might make teatime a little easier, though the spell needed some serious improvements. One couldn't simply charm a room full of teacups to start dancing spontaneously without some warning, or imparting some grace to their routines. She was hardly one to cry over spilt tea, but when it was this much tea how could anyone really avoid it? Quickly, Millie leaned over to a fellow student's desk and froze most of another teacup until it sat back down again.

"It does seem to work," the young witch agreed with her older mentor, the threat of tears frozen in the wake of her success. She was glad Sisse was there that evening, Millie didn't know what she would have done if she was alone tonight. For that matter...

"Say, where have all the matrons gone?"

For the first time since the cups had caught Sisse's attention she glanced around for the matrons. There weren't any in sight. Odd. "I'm not sure." She admitted, her mind spinning as she tried to think of another plan. She cast a freezing charm on a teacup going by, grateful when it stopped moving. "Can you get the left side, I'll get the right." Perhaps if they could divide the room they might manage this alright until a matron arrived. "There's a door to the library over there." Sisse nodded toward the left wall before casting another spell. "Maybe we should check in there." They could freeze the cups on their way. Or Millie could just try on her own. Sisse honestly wasn't sure what was the best choice at this point.

The third year nodded diligently, finding it easy to slip into the mindset of busywork. She liked this much more than studying, and Sisse administered it just like a professor. It was almost as if she noticed Millie's neglected Charms revision, gifting her the opportunity of practice to balance it out. It brought a smile to her lips as Millie piled all her things on the desk again. She took a sip of the cold tea before standing up to start on her side.

"We could check..." Millie agreed, waving her wand to still the teacups prancing wantonly on the desks within her sight. Then again, she thought, with Sisse's guidance the two of them were handling this little upset quite handily. That made her feel better about the few cups they had broken in the process, taking care of the rest herself did much to make up for that. "But wouldn't it be better if the matrons came back to the room all tidied up?"

Maybe there would even be House points in it for them.

That's not why Millie made the suggestion. Now that she had, however, the young witch found she truly wanted it. A little recognition for a job well done, surely that couldn't be too much to ask for. "You're such a talented witch, Sisse, why do we need the matrons when we have you?"

Her offhand compliment reminded Millie of another talent the older witch had as well, wondering if she dared ask Sisse for even more help now.

Millie had a point, they were in a room full of witches and wizards they could always convinced the others to help as well. "You're right. Better to clean up." She agreed with a smile.

The compliment made Sisse shake her head feeling awkward being complimented. "That's very sweet of you, but I doubt I'm nearly as capable as them." She likely only appeared it to Millie because she was older than Millie and had more experience, not because of any real skill.

"You are, really!" Millie insisted.

It did Sisse no good to try denying it, Millie decided. She hid her grin while charming another teacup, and it took all she had not to giggle as wobbled to a halt on its newly-frozen limbs. It was Sisse who thought of the freezing spell, and the young witch was certain her stunning charm would have worked on a sturdier vessel than porcelain. "Besides, the matrons can't very well be capable if they aren't here, now can they?"

Millie knew her argument was sound, even if her older companion disagreed. There weren't many dancing teacups left at all by now, just a pair of dancing wands taking care of the last of them. The wand in the lead was plain enough for anyone to see, surely even for Sisse herself. The young witch brimmed with joy at the feeling of the accomplishment, stepping up to the talented witch with a new subject, before they were stuck dwelling on who was capable until the sun came up.

"I was wondering," Millie began, trying not to make herself sound very patronizing about it. "Calla told me you're also very good at seamstress spells. Do you think you could help me with getting a dress to fit?"

Millie could just as soon go to a High Street tailor, but this would be more fun.

Sisse wasn't one to speak badly of the matrons so she bit her tongue and continued their work. Other students had followed their example and soon it seemed there were only a few rogue cups of tea dancing.

The change in subject surprised Sisse, "Of course. I would love to." Hemming and talioring gowns wasn't as fun as designing them but she did enjoy it.

The young witch felt her chest swell with warmth as Sisse agreed to her request. A moment later, a swish of her wand brought the last teacup to a frozen standstill. Two things accomplished in as little time! With this under her belt, Millie felt far more capable of finishing her studies tonight. At the very least, she knew she could handle freezing charms like a real witch!

"Thank you! I'll have to talk to my sister, or my cousins, one of them will have a dress close to my size." Millie turned to face Sisse, and couldn't hide the satisfaction on her face this time. She felt the tinge of pink in her cheeks, and carried it with her back to their desks. It didn't matter if someone else saw it now, the young witch felt emboldened enough by her own abilities tonight to mind.

As she sat with a swirl of her skirts and thoughts, Millie collected her papers again and tried to focus on the actual material. She found the grin returning to her face for the rest of the night, glancing up at Sisse when she guessed no one else could see. After tonight, it seemed assured that she would have a new dress ready in time for her cousin's wedding.

And, perhaps, a new friend to go along with it.
